I ate my dad.
Never taught me how to start a fire.

What little of what's left 
reminds me of the time I found a deer on the side of the road
that had just been hit by a car.

As its life slipped away, with no shame
and no home for its death, I met everything in its raw, natural state
and simply believed in doing my best.
It had, I reasoned, gone out.

What's missing in me is the thought it might be still engaged
with the secrets it kept
as he blew off his hand with the land 
in command of a man way out of his depth.
