Dr. Evan Thompson is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and an Associate Member of both the Department of Asian Studies and the Department of Psychology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and his work combines cognitive science, philosophy of mind, phenomenology, and cross-cultural philosophy, especially Asian philosophical traditions. His most recent books include “Why I Am Not A Buddhist” and “Waking, Dreaming, Being”.

Trailer: The Self Today

In this episode, we consider the first chapter of Cusk’s Outline alongside a paper by Daniela Dover entitled ‘The Conversational Self’. The paper examines the role of conversations in getting to know people, what an understanding of this entails for how we think about the self, and how open we should be to the influence of others. We analyse the conversations reported in Cusk’s novel in the light of Dover’s ideal.

1. The Conversational Self: Daniela Dover

In this episode, we talk about Chapters 2 and 3 of Rachel Cusk’s Outline alongside a chapter from Williams’s book Truth and Truthfulness. The chapter considers the differences between sincerity and authenticity as contending ideals of truthfulness about the self. These two ideals, on Williams’s argument, entail different ways of thinking about the self. We contrast Williams’s notion of authenticity with that invoked by various characters in Outline.

2. From Sincerity to Authenticity: Bernard Williams

In this episode, we discuss Chapter 5 of Cusk’s Outline alongside Chapters 3 to 5 of Taylor’s book, The Ethics of Authenticity. Taylor identifies a tension between the sense of identity which is derived from belonging to a community and contemporary culture’s emphasis on the importance of individual self-creation. We reflect on the ways in which Cusk’s book represents this tension.

3. The Ethics of Authenticity: Charles Taylor

In this episode, we discuss Chapter 6 of Cusk’s Outline alongside an essay by Murdoch called The Idea of Perfection. In this essay, Murdoch argues that the way we pay attention to the world is ethically significant. We talk about how Cusk’s narrator attends to the world, and what this leads the reader to infer about her character and sense of self.

4. The Ethics of Attention: Iris Murdoch

In this episode, we discuss the fifth and final section of Cusk’s Outline alongside a draft book chapter by James Lewis entitled The Peculiar Allure of Another’s Aesthetic Worldview. Lewis argues that appreciating someone’s aesthetic tastes is a central part of achieving intimacy with them. We discuss Cusk’s narrator’s prose style as a reflection of her aesthetic taste and ponder what it allows us to infer about her sense of self.

Featuring live comedy club atmosphere, dueling vocals, extended jazz instrumental solos, and spontaneous hecklers - cosmic wisdom delivered through Beat Generation swagger and sophisticated nu-jazz grooves. A meditation on the Self as both creator and destroyer, told through the image of citrus fruit falling from a backyard lemon tree. The tree represents Jung's concept of the Self—the totality of the psyche that encompasses both life-giving potential and inevitable loss. As "citrus suns dangle and dream of distant love," we see the Self's creative capacity, while "one by one they thud into the silent earth" reveals the Self's acceptance of all cycles, including endings. The sparse musical arrangement mirrors the spaciousness required for Self-realization—creating room for both beauty and grief to coexist without resistance. The Church prioritizes the sacred calendar in view of the Sacred Order of God’s Kingdom. Faithfully participating in the movements of the calendar is to participate in Christ, the crucified, risen, ascended, and returning King. Such participation is an act of resistance against the secular age as defined by this disordered world, disordered humanity, and the Devil. To worship the one true God is an act of defiance against the temptations that visit us inwardly and outwardly.

Elysian Drift… Forty years in the making. We’re not kidding!

Almost forty years! Four friends from a small rural Ontario town who had the audacity to think that they could push the musical boundaries of the rock/progressive rock genre following in the footsteps of their musical influences – Pink Floyd, Rush, Supertramp, Yes, Chick Corea, The Beatles, etc.

So why did it take so long? What happened?

In a word, ‘Life’ happened – first jobs, to first loves; the marriages, the separations; births and deaths; diversions and conversions. And in spite of it all, an inexplicable energy and chemistry between us has created a unique bond under which we gather and for which we have given the name, Elysian Drift. These first songs being released were crafted in the late seventies and early eighties.

We were a bunch of kids trying to say things about which we had little or no experience; not to mention very limited musical skills with which to express them. Today we’re definitely older, maybe a little wiser and just a tad more proficient in our playing abilities.

The demos are of various quality, from the early 90's Gregorian to the present day...

The songs start off as rough demos in various playlists here, and are then added to the 'Project Freeman Music Official Releases' playlist once they are finished, recorded and released to the major music platforms. (You can get your own copies of these via my Bandcamp link below, with all proceeds going to support my work and causes).
Therefore the quality of the demos here varies enormously, from old 1990s amateur recordings on cassette tape, to amateur home studio demos, to raw acoustic demos on the road in the camper van, to overdubbed tracks on the move, to more polished finished works etc etc

I have over 200 songs at various stages of production. My aim is to gradually publish my complete catalogue online, so the main thing here is to 'hear how the song goes' not to be fussy about the quality of recordings or performances.
Also, 'Tracks' have not been shared here in any particular order, so more recent Tracks could actually be much older, poorer quality demos and it's not possible to change the order of the Tracks once they have been uploaded, so please bare all this in mind when listening to 'Tracks'. It's probably best to choose a 'Playlist' and go from there :)
