Dramatic, cinematic, atmospheric...my favorite track on this album.  The lyrics pose the question that since the darkness was around before the light, and will be around after the light goes out, is it more powerful?   I try daily to stay in the light.  I was going for a Cure / Slowdive / shoegaze sound on this track.  It's a slow build but it was losing a lot of listeners initially, so I created the alternate, more poppy/punchy Light Mix (Track #2).  But I still love this one and found little ways to polish it up and add elements to beef it up and keep it moving.  I think this version is perfect for the album closer.

Closed is my new track that embodies an indie retro style, drawing heavily from the atmospheric, bleak, and minimalistic soundscapes of iconic albums like Seventeen Seconds by The Cure. With a blend of dark melodies and dreamy soundscapes, this song transports listeners to a nostalgic world filled with melancholic memories, shadowy emotions, and life chances never taken. 

The track opens with a gentle, chorus-heavy guitar riff that feels both mystical and inviting. The shimmering sounds echo the sonic tapestry of the 80s, while later, catchier guitar riffs weave in and out, flowing harmoniously in the background and carrying the song through its melancholic vibe. The minimalistic but hypnotic rhythm allow listeners to drift into a dreamy reverie, while the bass pulsates in total sync with the bass drum, elevating the dark energy of the track. 

The vocals are imbued with an emotive, slightly reverberated resonance, creating an atmospheric depth that conveys the song's poignant lyrical themes. The lyrics explore loss, longing, and the regret over lost chances in life. These losses are represented by closing doors through which only glimmers of light from these possible lives shine — resonating within the gothic and post-punk aesthetic. The combination of melancholic lyrics and haunting melodies evokes a sense of sadness that feels both comforting and unsettling. 

As the song progresses, dynamic peaks unfold with layered, washed-out guitar solos and droning background sounds, amplifying the emotional intensity of the experience. This sonic collage pays tribute to the sound design of the 80s while also not reaching it with just modern production elements and my limited capabilities. However, I hope that it gives the song a contemporary touch without losing its nostalgic character. 

The song features a mix of #goth, #post-punk, #dreamy, and #dark elements and attempts to capture the melancholic soul of an era, perfect for fans who share my passion for The Cure, Joy Division, and similar sounds.

Then I thought about this one scene from The Wedding Singer, and a quote from Jack Black's character in High Fidelity.  Hope Adam Sandler and Jables aren't too mad that I used their voices and image for this silliness.

Let me share my journey with you. I started DJing at 16, playing school events in Sydney alongside my mate David. By the time I was 19, I had broken into the Sydney club scene, finally stepping into the career I had always dreamed of. From the very beginning, I was passionate about playing uplifting music—there's nothing worse than being in a club with a DJ who doesn't know how to get the crowd moving.

Over time, I made my way into the heart of Sydney’s nightlife. The 90s were the golden era for DJs—the energy was electric, the music was explosive, and the vibe was unforgettable. I had the privilege of being trained by some of the best and working with top talent in the city. That’s where I truly found my groove.

Honestly, I wish the magic of 90s music had never faded, but times changed. In the early 2000s, I hung up my headphones and turned to producing club tracks, especially since so many artists weren’t releasing proper club mixes. Still, I never stopped DJing—I just evolved and moved into a new realm.

Former Eminence Grey singer and guitarist embarks on project to write and record all instrumentation and create atmospheric,  moody and angst ridden music influenced by 90s alternative, the cure,  math Rock and even jazz/ blues.   In the vein of Bright Eyes,  Ted Powenski attempts to release music all on his own....

Hollow Star is a Minneapolis based band that writes sad songs for happy people.
