This is a psychedelic overhaul of 911 trip hop style. I imagined a movie playing out in real life with me and my spouse and how much I love them, through our first date and through 15 years of marriage.  This one is for you my love.

Autechre brings out some horrifying and super experimental things in me. I really blame a steady diet of infomercials, after school specials, horror films from the 80s and 70s and adult cartoons for feeding my freakish ways. Inspired by a friend who put together a series of tracks somewhat like this, 24 years ago.  I decided to do my own take on it for The Great Beyond in 2023.  I like to delve the horror scape and create soundtracks for the mind.

This is a remixed Dub of an all-time classic that I did.  I wanted a jazzier version that was extended and knocked my socks off, like the original does.  As always support the original artist and buy their stuff.

MEMORIAL DAY 2023   *  TRAIN OF THOUGHT

So I imagined the orb putting together these samples of Fluffly Clouds, Blue Room and all their other tracks and then I imagined myself finding those samples and deconstructing their work and mixing it with my own stuff that I have recorded over the past 4 months.  That along with my obsession for F&CKed up media samples and my love of all things camp and ironic I ended up with this.

Orb Deconstructed (Meds Making Her Own Music Dub)

I was watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off and had an epiphany about what a warning that movie was to all that grew up in that era.  "Don't become your parents."  Voodoo Economics, and a precursor to our Rave Generation who wanted to feel joy in the moment.  Life is about today and we should live it.  (Sidenote: It also time capsules how sexist men were openly and how they treated women in that era and though we still have a long way to go, it has somewhat improved.)  

The Nancy Regan "Just say No" hits hard in America torn with the trickle down VooDoo economics that came to fruition and the drug additions and mental health crisis that it created for the future. Ben Stein was the poster boy for that film and look at the cost to our America. We could have become European Socialists but even Ferris says... "I will never be one."

This song is an amalgamation of all the lies they told us in our misspent youth and comes crashing into our present.  We are a nation of lost children of the 80's.  We are the kids who grew up to spawn cynical children of our own.  We are generation X the middle child often ignored.  We were never allowed to further our career because the boomers would never retire and when they finally did we were hung out to dry because the millennials were cheaper to hire because of the less experience.  

Ferris is a chaos demon he was living in the present. He wanted to enjoy life in the moment because he knew what was coming.  I tried to capture all of that in this song.  The conversations of the 80's the cliques and the promise of a perfect day when you felt truly alive. The mental illness created from self medication and hiding from our adult responsibilities is also addressed.  But the point of the movie and life in general is to stay focused on the present and live in the now.  Tomorrow may never come.

Was such a pleasure playing this (relatively) chill set at The Great Beyond, July 29, 2023.  My first time playing during the day felt different and we did not run the stage this year so we were booked in a 4 hour block Saturday called "The Headspace Collective". We split it evenly- Neil played first, Brandi next and then me. They did a great job of keeping it chill. I, as usual, couldn't keep it slow but worked it up for the perfect set up to JayceeLives playing disco, boogie and house.

Mike McClure aka Autokinetic has been performing live electronic music since the earliest days of the Minneapolis rave scene. Coming up alongside acts like Freddy Fresh, Woody McBride, and DVS1, his approach to electronic music is unmistakably informed by his long involvement in Minneapolis techno culture. Earlier in his career, Autokinetic produced hard, 909-driven acid and now focuses on deeper, more spacious techno grooves. His full-hardware live performances have an unmistakable after-hours feel that is true to his roots.

Autokinetic's recorded material is often captured in one take, keeping the real-time and human aspects of the music intact. McClure also performs as AutoClub with Craig Lambert (Midnight Music Club). You can find his music on Mistress Recordings, Fixed Rhythms, Electric Music Foundation, Trope Recordings, and Music Man, as well as an imprint co-managed with Freddy Fresh, Analog Records.
