The story of a robbery turned fatal, a city turned rotten, and justice turned political. “Intangible Things” is a true crime, non-fiction thriller detailing a murder in a crowded suburban department store on a Saturday afternoon in 1964, and the bizarre and twisted aftermath. The victim, 26-year-old television salesman Terrence “Terry” Zilligen, attempted to spoil an armed robbery but was gunned down by an unidentified thief in the process. Zilligen was a former US Air Force policeman, star baseball pitcher, and a father to three. Therefore, Zilligen’s murder, and the subsequent investigation, were both highly publicized events in the Chicagoland area in 1964, providing the audience with rich, intimate, and personal details of the victim’s life and his shocking fate. The crime resurfaced in the press during a politically charged federal trial in 1968, and again in 1983, when Chicago Sun-Times crime reporters alleged a conspiracy by federal agents to conceal the identity of the perpetrator, adding to the perplexity of the unsolved crime. The official investigation, characterization of the central suspects, and well-documented allegations of a political and/or governmental “cover-up,” are featured in the narrative.
