On November 22, 2022, just two days after Thanksgiving, River Barry was gearing up to go mountain biking in Kings Creek, Moab, Utah. Things quickly changed when all of a sudden, a base jumper crashed into the sandstone rock and was dangling ever so delicately 80-100 feet above the ground. Ep 85 - Climber Rescues Base Jumper In Utah - River Barry

On July 30, 2022, Austin suffered a heat illness that could have cost him his life. He was climbing on the Olympic Peninsula with two of his friends. They set out to climb ‘The Brothers,’ which are the two highest mountains in that range that you can see from miles and miles away. Due to his heat illness, he ultimately pressed the SOS button to get rescued. Part 1: Psychological Stress Injuries in Outdoor Culture

As you all know, the guests on my show share outdoor incidents they were involved in. Many of those stories have a physical injury that takes the focus. Say, a broken ankle from a climber falling, etc. In the outdoor and climbing industry we often think of stress injuries as being a physical overuse injury, but this is something different. 

In 2018, I had the pleasure of interviewing Laura McGladrey for the 34th episode of my podcast. The podcast is titled, Psychological First Aid, and at that time, I didn’t know very much about what that was. It was during this interview that I did with Laura, I learned that I actually have a stress injury from producing this podcast! 

What I’ve learned in 10.5 years of producing this podcast is the importance of highlighting and creating awareness around the very topic that this episode is all about.
