Michigan Business Beat | Mark Ostach - All About "Third Place"

The water was a deep radiant blue, from time to time small bubbles would rise from the ocean floor up the surface where an occasional flicker or glimmer of light would illuminate the lagoon as the clouds came and went before the sun. Diving deeper and deeper into the abyss, it were as if he was exploring some sort of mythical aquarian dream - a planet nestled beneath what he knew existed and floated up on the surface. 

There was no sound down here but very occasional he'd become aware of a change of pressure, a heavy weight and a light release as he moved slowly through the murky blue beyond. 

All he could do was keep swimming...

Third Place are set to release a new EP from Later Version, a beautiful assortment of fluid tracks which draw influence from a sense of weightlessness and ambient textures. Later Version is made up of Oakland-based artists Dan Letson and Jerod S. Rivera.

Bakk Heia’s schuttle drops the ‘Noisome Pools’ EP on Will Hofbauer’s gloriously idiosyncratic Third Place Records this December. The release starts with title track ‘Noisome Pools’, in which mysterious creatures gather to the sound of low-slung, organic drums, their gated voices humming along acidic licks and wriggling synth hits while tropical sounds envelop the forest. ‘Dungeon Shakti’ is next, its tempo dialled up with rattling percussion and hard-hitting kickdrums, futuristic bleeps and zaps whirring above while a robotic vocal rears its head occasionally.

schuttle’s ‘Jejunum’ continues the ‘Noisome Pools’ EP with more magical concoctions, culminating in a soundscape marked by tripped-out sequences and dub-infused rhythms before ‘Goo Imprint’ closes out the release. Intricate grooves with a side of wonk drive the track forward, while lightweight melodies and electrifying hits get doused in acid slick.

The bubbles drifted across the room as the crowd of people watched them rise into the great beyond and disappear. There was something fascinating about the way in which they floated and danced effortlessly upon the breeze.

From time to time they'd catch an effervescent glow beneath the sunbeams which coursed in through the windows illuminating what would otherwise be darkness.

Then they would simply pop.

It was as if they had never been there, much like a thought or a memory or a dream. They simply came and went.

In our latest 3place podcast episode, Seda Witt and Ingeborg Larsen share their experiences from Into the Performance. How can play and performing arts methodologies transform theatre into a shared third space for children?

Into the Performance! is a workshop and performance designed for children aged 10. Created by Kloden Theatre, Ingeborg Larsen, Seda Witt, and Kjell Moberg, and in collaboration with The Cultural Schoolbag Oslo, this program has been offered to several school classes in Oslo.

Witt and Larsen introduce children to the tools and mechanisms of the theatre, fostering a co-creative audience. Through storytelling within a simple framework, and by using the children’s own dramaturgical abilities, they manage to make the theatre a safe space for creativity.

Into the Performance! is learning by doing, a physical experience about what the performing art experience is, and what a theatre house can be for the young.
