One should be responsible for their own happiness 100% without any outside involvement. One should take everything at their own pace and should prioritize their own happiness over anything.

Growing up, I believed in many things. Even if something was obviously fake, like the tooth fairy, my mind would always have a percentage of hope that it was real. I taught myself to have faith no matter what. As I became older, however, I realized it was a childhood habit that I had to let go. Hope. I believe that hope is a dangerous thing. And I know this sounds kind of depressing and sad, but I choose to think of it from a different point of view.

Recently, I found that I would easily get disappointed if something did not go the way I hoped it would. If I auditioned for a part I expected to take, studied for an exam I expected to ace, or even tasted something I tried to bake, my mood for the day would totally depend on how it goes. I found that without expectation, without faith or hope, I can never really get as disappointed.

And I’m not trying to be an advocate for people here. It’s just something I find helpful for who I am as a person. I have gone through many things in life that made me the person I am today. Whether good or bad, I would not change a single thing about my past. I am proud of who I am today, and who I will be in the future. Refraining from hope does not mean that I don’t have goals for my future, it just means that I don’t expect anything from my goals.

I have a great fear of failure. If I put all my faith in achieving my goals and end up failing, I might damage my mental health. On the other hand, if I just live every day as it is and work hard to reach what I want without expectations, I have minimal risk of hurting my emotions. I honestly prefer the latter. If I don’t end up achieving my goal, I will be disappointed of course. However, it will be easier to handle if I did not expect to succeed.

The same actually applies to how happy I’ll be for both cases. If I expected success, my joy after will not be as great as not expecting success. And not expecting success does not mean expecting failure, it just means expecting nothing. If my hard work pays off and I succeed with zero expectation, my happiness will be a million times more.

The only exception for my faith and hope is God. I have no doubt in God’s plan for me. I’m sure that everything he puts me through is worth it. I’m in no place to question what he does for me, no matter how bad it is. In the end, I’m sure his tests will be worth going through. I do have faith in my future, and I do have high hopes for who I’ll be when I grow up, and it all falls under my faith in God. I am Mohammad Shawky, and this, I believe.

This playlist is a compilation of my favorite audio pieces produced for the Intro to Podcasting course at The American University in Cairo, taught by Professor Roshanak Zangeneh in the Spring semester of 2023.

1) This I Believe is an audio piece produced to emphasize on the importance of eating healthy food on a daily basis and how eating healthy can change one's mental state to the better. 

2) Interview the Interviewer is an audio interview with Mohamed Reda. Reda is an entrepreneur who graduated from AUC back in 2015. Reda's business is fully online and during the interview he gave multiple advices to anyone from the younger generation who's hoping to start an online business. 

3) Vox Pop is an audio piece produced in order to raise awareness on animal rights in Egypt and to find out the public's opinion on this matter. 

4)The Audio Drama piece is produced as part of the "Tumanbay" show. This piece is part of episode 1.01 called "A Head Start". The audio piece features myself and my classmate Youssef Rabie.

5) This audio piece was produced by myself as trailer for my podcast show "Forgotten History: Uncovering the Untold Stories of Egypt". The show aims to uncover prominent stories that took place in Egypt and were left out of the history books. The show will interview prominent historians in the field to ensure the accuracy of the content delivered.

This I believe

This podcast demonstrates how tennis made me a fighter and ameliorated my self-discipline and sense of responsibility toward myself, especially during my journey with Meningitis, which is a  severe illness that attacks the tissues surrounding the brain; where I was neither able to speak nor walk since the virus attacked the muscle responsible for the way the brain coordinated with talking and walking. 

The podcast accentuates how sports developed my character and gave me the strength to overcome such an ordeal.
