Chris Ryan’s work has been translated into over twenty languages, and appeared just about everywhere, including Netflix, HBO, MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, NPR, The New York Times, The Times of London, Playboy, The Washington Post, National Geographic, and More…

Chris has been a featured speaker at TED, SXSW, The Festival of Dangerous Ideas at the Sydney Opera House and is a frequent guest on The Joe Rogan Experience, the Duncan Trussell Family Hour, and many other podcasts. 

Even before co-authoring the New York Times best-seller, Sex at Dawn: How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What it Means for Modern Relationships with Cacilda Jethá, MD in 2010, Chris was on a wild ride.

After receiving a BA in English and American literature in 1984 he spent the next two decades traveling around the world, pausing in unexpected places to work at very odd jobs.

In his mid-30s, Chris decided to get a little serious and pursue doctoral studies in Psychology at Saybrook Graduate School, in San Francisco, CA, using his dissertation to examine Darwin’s rather naive understanding of human sexual evolution — providing the core arguments later advanced in Sex at Dawn.

Chris’s latest book, Civilized to Death: The Price of Progress asks whether civilization has been a net benefit to our species. He hosts a weekly podcast, Tangentially Speaking, often recorded from the road while traveling in his van. The podcast features conversations with comics, bank robbers, drug smugglers, porn stars, authors, and an occasional rattlesnake expert.

Dominique Lyone faced bankruptcy. He borrowed his father’s life savings and owed money left, right and centre. Experts told him to shut down his office supplies business, but Dominique, who came to Australia from Egypt to escape the Six-Day War, isn’t a quitter. 

That’s history.  Today, that same business has become the biggest provider of office supplies in Australia.

“Complete Office Supplies (COS) was started some 40 years ago,” he says, “and now has over twenty thousand products and seven distribution centres around the country. Our core promise is: ‘Give us an order today, and we’ll have that delivered to you tomorrow morning’.  In the corporate world, we deal with companies like KPMG, One Steel, Freehills, accountants, professional services, and other major firms.  It’s who we can service the best and where we’re most capable.”

Dominique was born in Alexandria in Egypt. “It was a beautiful city on the Mediterranean Sea and I had a comfortable childhood.  Both my parents were orphans so I didn’t have grandparents or aunts and uncles.  It was just me, my mum and dad and my sister.  For the first ten or so years everything was perfect.  I then started to notice what today we would call religious discrimination. Not much later, my father got us together and said he’d made a decision that the best thing for this family was to leave and immigrate to a place called Australia.”

Dominique’s father chose Australia because he knew one person who had immigrated there two years earlier.

Dominque Lyone, CEO, Complete Office Supplies: Learn from Failure

IT business owner Jacob Ohlson may have started his working life with a job at Hungry Jacks, but his passion for technology has fuelled the remarkable growth of his internet technology company.

Now with 50 staff across four cities, Jacob drives the ambitious goal of international expansion, and it all stems from the love he developed for computer technology after receiving a Commodore 64 computer on his tenth birthday. It was a life compass as well as a motherboard. His inquisitive mind and the machine’s hard drive combined to teach him the value of pure fun with this new technology, and he learned to reformat the computer setup sequence after deleting it all, many times over!

Curiosity, and a developing penchant for all things technological, steered Jacob into an undergraduate degree in Computer Science at Monash University. In his first year he worked part-time for computer hardware manufacturer and wholesaler Alloy Computer Products (ACP), refining his knowledge about computing and networks. He began to notice that Alloy’s new products for business were selling, but computer support and product training were conspicuously lacking in the market. 

He stepped in; confident he had the capabilities to fill the gap he’d identified, and began a hobby business out of his parents’ garage.

With just one, then two customers – both still with him today – he steadily grew the business from part-time hobby into an enterprise which has just received internationally-recognised certification to elevate his professional standing in the industry globally, The business has expanded interstate and into New Zealand.

Jacob makes sure he tends to his staff to keep them on the pulse and happily engaged in the business. He looks after his customers in the same manner. His mantra is “I can only sell what I truly believe will work; products and services which are robust, and reliable, and will meet the customers’ expectations for their business requirements. Without that, I don’t want to sell.”

Jacob Ohlson - Power-Net IT Solutions - Humble Beginnings

Leading a company which encourages those with new ideas was almost a natural progression for John Katsiris; something he saw as a child, but never really understood until he began to reflect on his own journey.

John recalls, “My Dad worked a lot in factories, as we were growing up, my parents had no one to look after us. There was no day care then, so they decided to set up a family business; a milk bar, with no experience.”

His parents’ idea was to be there for their children as much as they could. The only way they saw to ensure that happened was to start a business which enabled at least one of them to be with the children.

A migrant Greek couple, living in Melbourne and deciding to run the local corner store, mightn’t seem like a brainwave but, on reflection, John believes it set in motion the principles which have dictated his success, not only in business, but also in life.

John Katsiris - CEO MYbrainwave - Innovation Incubator

Katherine Hawes is a globally recognised figure in the emerging field of marine and ocean law, which includes aquaculture and maritime law. 

She lives life in the fast lane; advising international fishery and shipping corporations, lecturing law students at university and racing sports cars.

Katherine grew up in Rooty Hill, a working class area in Sydney’s Western Suburbs. She attended the local Catholic school, St. Aidan’s, and then Our Lady of Mercy College at Parramatta.

Was she a good student? “I loved school and learning. I always enjoyed reading, and didn’t particularly like sport. I always seemed to have an injury on sports day. I’d much prefer to go to the library and read a book than do those silly cartwheels. I grew up as an only child, so I’m very comfortable with my own company and learnt from an early age how to entertain myself.”
