Today you will learn more about the connection between hypothyroidism and carpal tunnel syndrome. 

And if you are someone who has carpal tunnel syndrome then you will definitely want to check your thyroid because thyroid dysfunction is a potentially reversible cause of this condition. 

Carpal tunnel syndrome (referred to as CTS) is the most common nerve entrapment syndrome in the body and is something that up to 20% of thyroid patients suffer from. 

As an incredibly debilitating condition, it leads to discomfort, pain, and, if severe, insomnia thereby impacting many other systems in the body. 

Hypothyroid patients end up with CTS for 2 reasons: 

1. Because of the buildup of mucopolysaccharides in the wrist (which draw in water and result in edema). 

And 2. Due to weight gain which is the direct result of decreased thyroid function. 

The good news is that there are many ways to eliminate the symptoms associated with CTS but many of them may not be on the radar of your doctor.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? Check Your Thyroid

There are plenty of foods that can improve the health of your thyroid but few are better than chia seeds. 

Chia seeds are filled with incredible ingredients in the form of healthy fat,, plant-based protein, nutrients, and other bioactive compounds. 

When you combine this with the fact that they are easy to consume and last a long time on your shelf, they are a powerhouse food for thyroid patients. 

Here are several reasons why I think thyroid patients should seriously consider eating chia seeds each day: 

#1. Help control your appetite and support a healthy weight. 
Because chia seeds expand when introduced to water, they can help you feel full longer. This makes chia seeds a great food if you are trying to lose weight. 

#2. Great source of omega-3 fatty acids.
Chia seeds contain a massive amount of omega 3 fatty acids, even more than fish. The key here is that the omega 3 fatty acids found in chia seeds are shorter chain compared to the longer chain DHA and EPA found in fish (so both are still necessary). 

#3. They are loaded with protein. 
For a plant, they contain a modest amount of protein per serving. You won’t be able to get your daily protein intake from chia seeds alone, but they can spruce up the protein content of other foods and dishes. 

#4. Highly nutritious and packed with vitamins and minerals. 
Compared to other foods, chia seeds boast an incredible nutrient profile that includes vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, proteins, and isoflavones. 

#5. Easy to incorporate into your diet.

#6. Help Keep Your Cholesterol Level Normal.

#374 Hypothyroid prevalence, Thyroid antibodies, TSH misconceptions, Hypopituitarism with Carol Petersen.

Is there a connection between the use of artificial sweeteners and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis? Well, there’s at least one case study that showed an interesting connection:

One woman was able to completely put her Hashimoto’s into remission by doing one thing: avoid artificial sweeteners. 

Does this mean that the use of these compounds cause Hashimoto’s or that they should be avoided by everyone? It doesn’t. 

But it does suggest that removing them from your diet is a VERY good idea if you have this condition for the following reasons: 

1. There are very few treatments available for patients with Hashimoto’s so you might as well take advantage of the few that exist. 

2. You won’t cause any harm by removing them from your diet. 

3. The use of artificial sweeteners has been linked to other health problems in humans and animals. 

4. There’s no need to consume artificial sweeteners given that there are more natural low-calorie sweet options available. 

5. There are other, better ways for patients with Hashimoto’s to lose weight!

Avoid artificial sweeteners if you have Hashimoto’s

Thinking about using high-dose iodine to "help" your thyroid? Think again. I can’t think of many good reasons to use high-dose iodine for one simple reason:

The benefits don’t outweigh the risks. 

Are there benefits to using high-dose iodine? Sure, but those benefits can be obtained using other, less dangerous, therapies and treatments. 

Some people disagree with this idea by suggesting that high-dose iodine is not only beneficial but necessary. 

Let’s break apart their arguments to see if they hold water: 

Argument #1. High-Dose Iodine is Safe Because The Japanese Population Consumes 12.5 mg Per Day. 

This may be appealing if it were true, but it’s not. Data from the Japanese government shows that the Japanese consume, on average, 1 to 3 mg per day. 

Argument #2. High-Dose Iodine Helps Detoxify Harmful Compounds (Halogens). 

There is some truth to this argument but you don’t need high doses of iodine to detox out halogens from your body. You can do this with chloride and low doses of iodine. 

Argument #3. High-Dose Iodine Does Not Cause Autoimmune Thyroid Disease. 

There is a clear connection between increasing iodine intake and the onset of autoimmune thyroid disease that has been confirmed by multiple studies. 

How much iodine should you take each day? The ideal dose is 150 to 300 mcg per day from all sources. 

It’s probably safe to increase your dose up to 1 to 3 mg per day at the most, based on available data, but there will be some risks associated with these higher doses so proceed with caution. 

Based on the data, and my experience, staying in the 150 mcg to 300 mcg per day range provides the most benefit without any side effects.

Stop Taking High Dose Iodine (It’s Harmful)

You might have heard me say before that if your doctor is trying to convince you that your thyroid symptoms are from something other than your thyroid, then it’s time to see another doctor. 

While that is very often the case, there are absolutely other medical conditions that can mimic hypothyroid symptoms. 

These medical conditions can cause symptoms that are so close to that of hypothyroidism, that it’s actually really easy to confuse the two. 

The good news is that there are slight differences between these conditions and it is possible to tell them apart. 

But in order to do that, you have to be aware that they exist!

Here are 8 different medical conditions that cause symptoms that are almost identical to that of hypothyroidism: 

1. Hyperparathyroidism
2. Anemia and low ferritin. 
3. Sleep apnea. 
4. Menopause and perimenopause. 
5. Fatty liver. 
6. Adrenal fatigue. 
7. Fibromyalgia. 
8. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

8 Medical Conditions That Mimic Hypothyroidism

Vitamin K2 is a fat-soluble vitamin that provides benefits that just about every thyroid patient wants. 

Unlike vitamin K1, vitamin K2 has a much more broad-reaching impact on multiple systems in the body including calcium regulation, cancer prevention, hormone balance, and more. 

And unlike vitamin K1, vitamin K2 is more difficult to get and not as well known. 

This presents an awesome opportunity for thyroid patients to take more of this vitamin to get the benefits that it provides. 

Some benefits of vitamin K2 use include: 

1. It balances calcium levels in the body. Vitamin K2 helps put calcium where you want it and keeps it from places that you don’t. This means it helps direct calcium away from your arteries and into your bones and teeth. It works perfectly with vitamin D. 

2. It helps strengthen your bones and prevents pre-mature bone loss. Vitamin K2 also helps to prevent pre-mature bone loss which is a condition that thyroid patients suffer from! Whether you have hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, your bones will suffer. 

3. It has anti-cancer actions. Finally, thyroid patients are at increased risk for developing cancer whether that be from the use of levothyroxine or from thyroid dysfunction. For this reason, paying attention to your personal cancer risk is important if you have thyroid disease. 

There are two types of vitamin K2 including MK4 and MK7. MK4 is better for supporting sex hormones and providing anti-cancer benefits while MK7 is better for supporting bone health. 

Don’t confuse vitamin K1 with vitamin K2 as they are completely different compounds!

Why Thyroid Patients Need Vitamin K2

There are a lot of different ways that you can naturally improve how well your thyroid functions and this one is probably the most overlooked of them all: 

Managing your muscle mass. 

Your muscle mass is considered a thyroid-responsive tissue and represents around 30 to 40% of your body mass. 

Put another way, it may be one of the biggest targets of thyroid hormone action. 

The more muscle mass you have the more active your thyroid will be. 

On top of this, building more muscle mass has the potential to improve your weight, metabolism, and your thyroid all at the same time.

Fix your thyroid with more muscle mass
