When the Titanic struck the iceberg in 1912, the Wallace Hartley band was called upon to play in order to allay panic and to maintain an atmosphere of calm. In the final chaos, as the last lifeboats drifted away, someone fancied they heard the hymn ‘Nearer My God To Thee’. 

Wallace Hartley, leading the eight-member band as the ship sank on 15 April 1912. Neither he nor the rest of the band survived the sinking.
