After ten years, former Norwegian Prime Minister (2000–2001 and 2005–2013) Jens Stoltenberg is stepping down as NATO Secretary General. 30 September is his last day at the helm of the Alliance.

On 1 October, former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte will become NATO’s new secretary general. Stoltenberg’s term of office has been extended twice because the Alliance countries could not reach a consensus on who would replace the Norwegian.
