The Original Transplants Podcast Episode 60 finds Satoyama Homestead stewards Will and Sarah sharing some personal brood news of their own, and reflecting on successes and failures in the apiary, chicken coop, and edible landscape. Despite a strong spring bloom season, the bees are off to a slow start and do not have strong honey reserves. Broody hen Mayapple rejects the introduced chicks, which are instead being hand-raised in a plastic tote in the garage, confirming experiences shared by listener Wyoming Jo (https://www.instagram.com/jodhopper_g/). The stewards are enjoying decent harvests of strawberries, shell and snap peas, lettuce, and leafy greens, but Sarah is disappointed in a poor showing from her rhubarb, broccoli, and weak tomato seedlings. For homestead fun, the stewards have enjoyed citing songbird fledglings, groundhog pups, and even a pregnant whitetail doe on the property. While Brood X cicadas were a bust on the homestead, Sarah reveals she is busting her waistline at 6 months pregnant with the couple's first child. We look forward to putting Baby Caverly to work on the homestead in the coming years! For homestead chores, the stewards talk turf and path maintenance, invasives management, garden bed prep, and vegetable transplants. The show closes with four agricultural news articles on the topic of "The Law of Unintended Consequences" or, as they say on the DarkHose Podcast, "Welcome to Complex Systems" about ineffective whitetail deer controls, how a pallet shortage will impact produce distribution, new technology to detoxify beehives of insecticides, and the upside of respecting complex systems on a cattle ranch.

Ep. 74 Talking summertime tomato growing

Artificial intelligence can now be used to predict the future with unprecedented accuracy.

That’s good news for companies in the fruit and vegetable business, where the products’ sheer unpredictability in terms of yield and shelf-life remains the industry’s biggest inherent challenge.

Michele Dall’Olio, chief operating officer Fresh4cast, says companies have started to unlock the big potential that AI offers. In particular, he says, greater predictability means greater profitability.

“Being able to see into the future, and have a good understanding of what happened in the past, brings you multiple benefits,” he tells Chris White during the latest episode of Fruitnet’s conversation series Fruitbox.

Fresh4cast has pioneered the introduction of AI-based yield forecasting software over the past decade, and in doing so has enabled suppliers of items like berries and tomatoes to fine-tune their operations by making them more predictable.

“If you think about the medium to long-term time horizon, this can help you avoid potential shocks to your supply chain, or help you leverage better an opportunity that the market presents – like for example by arranging a promotion or organising your pickers for next season.”

There are also short-term benefits, he continues. “You can, for example, manage your workforce better in the packhouse. Or you can arrange an alternative sales channel to avoid wastage, in case you have an overstock of a product.”

Dall’Olio is keen to dispel some of the myths around artificial intelligence. “AI is not that sentient being that all the sci-fi movies are telling us about. It’s a smart piece of software that is very good at performing large amounts of relatively simple and easy tasks,” he observes. “AI is a tool that allows you to perform multiple tasks with exponential ease.”

Sarah describes the drama of introducing the new flock of pullets to the rooster, Jumpy, and brooder hen, Mayapple, who are the lone survivors of Will's recent cull. Pepper, tomato and spinach prices have gone up by at least 20% after ice frost in the Limpopo region caused damage to these crops. According to Agrimark Trends, the volume of spinach and peppers delivered to fresh produce markets are declining. The icy frost affected spinach crops the worst, forcing consumers to pay 27% more. This price increase of common household vegetables is not the first and has been increasing the price of the consumer basket.
