Nancy (she/her) is Breast Cancer Prevention Partners’ (BCPP) Director of Program and Policy and works at the state and federal levels to advance public policy to reduce exposures to toxic chemicals. Before joining BCPP, Nancy spent over 20 years in Washington DC advocating for numerous causes, including civil rights for women and the GLBTQ+ community. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and earned a Masters degree in Biological Oceanography from the University of Connecticut. Nancy is an avid outdoors person, spending her spare time hiking and birding in Northern California and beyond.
 
In the 13 years Nancy has worked for BCPP, she has focused on several issues related to breast cancer prevention including strengthening the country's broadest law governing synthetic chemicals – the Toxic Substances Control Act; implementation of the ban on several phthalates in toys and childcare articles; and advocating for federal resources to support the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and environmental health programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including the biomonitoring and health tracking programs. Her more recent experience has focused specifically on state legislative work, including BCPP’s co-sponsorship of legislation to remove toxic chemicals from plastic products, require the disclosure of ingredients in cleaning, and banning forever per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from firefighting foams, paper-based food packaging, and textiles.

EP 495: How to Protect Your Children from Hidden Chemical Toxins with David Steinman

In the summer of 2024, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released a Hemp Plant Reference Material to help labs accurately measure the amount of THC, CBD, toxic elements and other compounds in cannabis products. It will also help producers and state regulators ensure that cannabis products are safe to use and accurately labeled.

Today, we’re going to talk about NIST's Hemp Plant Reference Material and about improving cannabis science with leading experts in the field of cannabis medicine.

Our guests are Dr. Bryon Adinoff, president of the Doctors for Drug Policy Reform, and Dr. Leslie Mendoza Temple, former Chair of the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board for the Illinois Department of Public Health. 

Dr. Adinoff is an addiction psychiatrist, neuroscientist, academician, and advocate. He was appointed Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine following his retirement as Distinguished Professor of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Research in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and as a psychiatrist for 30 years with the Department of Veterans Affairs. He has published over 200 papers and book chapters on the neurobiology and treatment of addiction and is Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

Dr. Temple is a Clinical Associate Professor for NorthShore University HealthSystem’s Department of Family Medicine and Medical Director of the NorthShore Integrative Medicine Program. She was recently appointed as an endowed Chair of Integrative Medicine by the Owen L. Coon Foundation. She is also a Clinical Associate Professor in Family Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

Most people use several different personal care products every day. For example, you may use a shampoo and conditioner, creams or lotions, shaving cream, fragrances, toothpaste and some makeup, including lipstick, eyeliner and eyeshadow.

If you read the labels on these products you'll see a list of chemicals, and you may assume that these chemicals have been tested to make sure that they're safe. 

However, the Food and Drug Administration does not do any long-term testing on these chemicals. They may be tested to see whether they result in short-term problems, such as skin irritation, and the FDA may act, if they get complaints about harmful effects from a product.  

Several nonprofit groups are finding or conducting the necessary studies and distributing that vital information to us consumers. One organization is the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and in this program, we feature Kaley Beins a senior scientist of chemical safety and toxicology at the EWG.
