Paolo and Noemia d’Amico have pursued their passion in wine and have created an award winning portfolio of 8 organic labels grown and produced in Umbria. Mainly using French grape varieties, the volcanic soil from the Calanchi Valley adds a new take on established variants. Once produced, the wines are stored to the sound of classical music in the cellar created by Noemia d’Amico and world renowned architect Luca Brasini. Made from tufo rocks, the cellar carves its way underneath the hanging garden, via magnificent structural arches that create an enchanting pathway to the library, adjoining a special room where tasting takes place amongst vintages from 30 years of Paolo e Noemia d’Amico wines.

More about today’s winery
The Tenuta di Fessina project was born in 2007, when after a series of trips aimed at studying and discovering the Etna terroir, Silvia Maestrelli, late Tuscan producer and pioneer on the volcano, decided to stop in Rovittello, on the northern side, where today the beating heart of Fessina resides. Here she was captivated by the uniqueness of the place, the very particular position of the soil, gathered between two volcanic slopes dating back to 1809 and 1911. From here it all begins, first in the North, precisely in 2007, then to the South West, one of the bets initials made in 2009, and finally to the East, in the municipality of Milo, starting from 2012. The philosophy of TDF project, is to collect and vinify different snapshots, all taken from different sides and only in historical reference areas. Jacopo Maniaci takes place at the winery in 2014 as winery director and in 2021 as CEO, he graduated Economics and communication at UNI of Messina, Sicily, and took a Master Degree at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo, Cuneo. His family is in restaurants and breeding in the mountains of Nebrodi, but he lives at the winery since 2017, taking care of the whole TF project. Fessina in particular rests on an alluvial residual, pyroclastic, a sandy and fine deposit, made of volcanic sand and pumice, dating back between 5,000 and 15,000 years old, draining and capable of guarantee elegance and verticality. Today the winery sells in 20 countries, with average 80.000 bottles of DOC Etna wines.

Welcome to episode 2150 of the Italian Wine Podcast, and episode 164 of Wine, Food & Travel with Marc Millon. Marc’s guest today is Matteo Ascheri of Cantine Ascheri, a winery and hospitality complex in Piemonte, in northwest Italy. 

More about today’s winery:
 
The Ascheri winery was originally established in La Morra at the dawn of the 19th century. It was there, where today there still exists a place called "Ascheri", that the first vines were planted and the first wines produced. In those years, the most important town for the production of Barolo, the best known wine of this area, was Bra, due to its good connections with Turin. Because of this, in 1880 the cellars were moved from La Morra to Bra, where they are still located today. They are the only remaining cellars which can boast this beautiful and ancient heritage. To the La Morra vineyards were added the vineyards of Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno and Bra, with the philosophy that only the maximum respect for their management can create great wines. In the winery, the aim is to obtain a wine which is the expression of the vineyard it comes from, of the grapes it is made from, and, above all, of the ideas of the winemaker. Alongside the winery is the Osteria Murivecchi and the hotel Albergo Cantine Ascheri.

Valentina is Marc’s Italian teacher (for the past 20 years or more), is originally from the province of Avellino in Campania, and has a great knowledge and love of her area. In this episode they talk about life, wine and food in Irpinia (Avellino and Benevento) and also about life, wine and food in general in Campania.

Valentina Todino is Honorary Associate Research Fellow for the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC) and MA in Applied Translation, at University of Exeter (UoE), following her BA Hons in Modern Foreign Languages at the University of Rome, La Sapienza. 
Being herself a migrant to the UK since 2002, her interest has focused on migration and translation of identity for several years. Since 2017, she worked on a project called Transcultural Devon. This draws inspiration from her central role of community connector, especially within the Italian diaspora as founder of the Italian Cultural Association Exeter, but more in general within the whole international and migrant community based in Devon. 
As a believer in praxis and inspired by her will to continue her research into migration issues, she decided to build first-hand experience of working with asylum seekers and refugees. Alongside her independent research role, she is now become Drop-in and Events coordinator for the charity Refugee Support Devon. 
Valentina Alba Todino was born in Italy, were she remembers spending many Sundays in her uncle’s backyard, under a roof of grapevines, singing along all the cliche Neapolitan songs that you can think of, accompanied by an accordion and some dancing too, depending on the quantity of wine offered by the host. She always had a keen interest in music, so she started learning some jazz standards from a friend double bass player in her twenties and then went on to folk music, by singing in an amateurs’ local bands, when still in Italy. After moving to this country, she had a long break from singing until she became co-founder of southern Italian folk band Trikkeballakke, inspired by the traditions of Tarantelle, especially Tammurriate and Pizziche. Her research interest in music in migration has led her to meet many talented local artists and she enjoys occasional jam sessions with them and some gigs too, including some collaboration with Spanish, Latin American, Kurdish, Mexican musicians and many more.

Lebanon's association with wine is as old as time. It is well established that wine making was already prevalent there thousands of years ago and that it was one of the joys of early civil society. From the first miracle of Christ, turning water into wine, to the Romans who built a temple in honour of Bacchus, the god of wine in the Beqaa valley, this tradition has been continuously present with over 50 winemakers operating today in Lebanon. One of the clear stand-out producers of the new generation celebrating its 25th anniversary is award-winning Massaya. Sami Ghosn, literally a renaissance man. He created Massaya from the wreckage of his family's estate in the Beqaa. Since returning from the United States in 1992 after civil war devastation, he and his brother Ramzi have built a winery in the Beqaa and a fabulous wine resort in Faqra, Mount Lebanon. Sami travels widely to promote Massaya thereby also serving as a roving ambassador for the country. Looking back at his family's legacy, the struggles in the Middle East, and the pride in his homeland, wine has a special significance for Sami. He says: “A glass of wine from Lebanon is more than an alcoholic beverage. It is a message of civilization, resilience, tolerance, and identity”.

Talamonti, one of Italy’s most dynamic boutique wine producers, is the first winery to earn the GEEIS-Diversity certification. Established in 2001, the Talamonti Family Estates includes iconic sustainably produced wines from 75 hectares of estate vineyards and olive groves in the village of Loreto Aprutino (Abruzzo) in Central Italy under Talamonti (www.tenutatalamonti.it), Ilauri (www.i-lauri.it) and Colle Corviano estates (www.collecorviano.it). Established in 1999 and now in its third generation, the Muratori family makes wine exclusively from its own grapes, with 54 hectares of vineyards that are approximately 25 years old. The Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Bianco vineyards are located in six geographically diverse areas of Franciacorta with the aim of telling the story of the soil and climate variety of Franciacorta in every glass. Respect and enhancement of the territory are founding concepts for the family's philosophy. The cellar is an example of underground architecture at the service of sustainability: it extends almost 15 meters underground, covering a surface area of ​​approximately 15,000 square meters, which allows gravity to be used to move the musts during the harvest and guarantees a constant microclimate throughout the various periods of the year. The agrivoltaic system, suspended above one of the vineyards adjacent to the winery (one of the first built in Italy in 2011), will soon ensure energy self-sufficiency thanks to the expansion program, which includes a doubling of the electrical potential from 200 Kw/peak to 400 Kw/peak. Since the 2020 harvest, the famous winemaker Riccardo Cotarella and his team have overseen the entire line of Muratori wines.
