An in-person 'in conversation' event featuring Dr Svitlana Khyliuk (Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine) and Dr David Kenny (TCD), organised by the School of Law in association with the Trinity Long Room Hub.

Ukraine’s constitutional structures have regularly been revised since its independence. While it was already moving on a path towards closer association with Europe, new urgency for progressing EU membership presents a significant challenge for Ukraine to bring its laws, governance structures, and judiciary in line with highest international standards, including in the field of human rights protections. In this discussion, Dr Svitlana Khyliuk from the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine will speak to Dr David Kenny about Ukraine’s possible constitutional futures after the war; the challenges of aligning Ukraine’s legal system with that of the EU; Ukraine’s identity and its place in Europe; and the ongoing war and how it impacts on her work.

Dr Svitlana Khyliuk is an associate professor and director of the law school at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine. Dr. Khyliuk has been a legal expert in the projects of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Project Coordinator in Ukraine, the Council of Europe, and the U.S. Department of Justice in relation to projects in Ukraine. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Ukraine’s Supreme Court and Constitutional Court. She teaches Criminal law and Law of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Dr David Kenny is an Associate Professor of Law and Fellow at Trinity College Dublin, teaching and researching Irish and comparative constitutional law and law and literature. He has been involved with various constitutional reform processes in Ireland, giving evidence to, amongst other bodies, the Citizens' Assembly and Oireachtas Committee on the 8th amendment. He has also been involved in constitutional futures and/or constitutional mapping projects in the Northern Ireland, the Korean Peninsula, and Ukraine.

When we look forward to possible technological futures, we often do so from the perspective of a very foreshortened present. But what does it mean to think about the future of large technological systems in a much deeper timescale? In their work at the School of Cybernetics at the Australian National University (ANU), Genevieve Bell and her colleagues became fascinated with an early technological project – the Australian Overland Telegraph of 1872 – which in turn is embedded within a landscape that challenges any sense of measurable historical time. Over the past few years, Genevieve and her colleague, photographer Andrew Meares, have put together a remarkable photographic record of their engagement with this unique site from which it is possible to re-imagine our understanding of the relations of technology, humans and the environment. In “Technology’s Deep Time”, Genevieve and Andrew discuss their project with Chris Morash, who accompanied them into the Outback in 2022.

Genevieve Bell is the Director of the School of Cybernetics, Florence Violet McKenzie Chair, and a Distinguished Professor at the Australian National University (ANU) as well as a Vice President and Senior Fellow at Intel Corporation. She is a cultural anthropologist, technologist and futurist best known for her work at the intersection of cultural practice and technology development.

Andrew Meares is the Cybernetic Futures Lead at the School of Cybernetics at the Australian National University (ANU). Andrew began work as a press photographer in 1991, and was made chief photographer of the Sydney Morning Herald in 1998. He has covered politics, protests and portraits to bushfires, coups and war zones, won a Walkey Award for Best Online Journalism in 2010 and curated the Australian Cybernetic 2022 exhibition.

Chris Morash is the Seamus Heaney Professor of Irish Writing at TCD. He has published widely on Irish literature and culture, and recent books include Yeats on Theatre (2021) and Dublin: A Writer’s City (2023). He has also published on media history in Ireland and contributed an article on the transatlantic telegraph to Entanglement, Ireland’s entry in the Venice Biennale.

Technology's Deep Time

An in-person lecture by Prof Rashid Khalidi (Columbia University) organised by the Trinity Long Room Hub in partnership with the School of History, UCD.

Rashid Khalidi is Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University. He received a B.A. from Yale University in 1970 and a D. Phil. from Oxford University in 1974, and has taught at the Lebanese University, the American University of Beirut, and the University of Chicago. He was President of the Middle East Studies Association, and is co-editor of the Journal of Palestine Studies. He served as an advisor to the Palestinian delegation to the Madrid and Washington Arab-Israeli peace negotiations from October 1991 until June 1993.

Khalidi is author of eight books, including The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine: A History of Settler-Colonialism and Resistance, 1917-2017 (2020), and Palestinian Identity: The Construction of Modern National Consciousness (rev. ed. 2010), has co-edited three others, and has published over 100 academic articles. He has written op-eds in the New York Times, Washington Post, and many other newspapers, and has appeared widely on TV and radio in the US and abroad.

The Hundred Years' War on Palestine

‘Women and War’ is the theme of the 2023 Wexford Festival Opera (24 Oct-5 Nov). Developed by Wexford’s Artistic Director, Rosetta Cucchi, this year’s programme uses the medium of opera to explore how war is experienced, endured, and articulated by women. The three main stage operas at Wexford will be: Zoraida di Granata (1822) by Gaetano Donizetti; L’Aube Rouge (1911) by Camille Erlanger; and La Ciociara (Two Women) (2015) by Marco Tutino, based on the novel by Alberto Moravia.

In anticipation of this innovative programme, the Trinity Long Room Hub is hosting a special discussion to explore the representation of ‘Women and War’ in literature, theatre, music, and visual art. The Festival’s acclaimed Artistic Director Rosetta Cucchi will join the celebrated Irish Times foreign correspondent Lara Marlowe and the Trinity Long Room Hub Director, Eve Patten, for a wide-ranging conversation on the themes and vision behind this year’s Wexford Festival Opera. This unique collaboration event, which will include both film and music excerpts from the opera programme itself, is open to all and not to be missed.

Speakers:

Rosetta Cucchi is the Artistic Director of the Wexford Festival Opera and an experienced director in many of the world’s greatest opera houses. She is also a pianist, and has a master’s degree in Theatre Studies from the University of Bologna. From 2006 to 2018, she was the Artistic Director of Fondazione and Symphonic Orchestra Arturo Toscanini, Parma. Her most recent and future directing projects include Tutino’s La Ciociara, Wexford Festival, Figaro and La Bohème, Boston Lyric Opera, Adriana Lecouvreur, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Rossini’s Otello, Rossini Festival Pesaro, Eugene Onegin, Opera Omaha, USA, and L’Amico Fritz, Teatro del Maggio Musical Fiorentino.

Lara Marlowe became a foreign correspondent for The Irish Times in 1996. Since her official retirement in April 2023 she has continued to contribute regularly to the Irish Times and radio stations in France, Ireland and the UK. She has worked extensively in France, the Middle East and the US, and reported on the war in Ukraine in 2022. Before the Irish Times, she wrote for Time Magazine, the Financial Times and the International Herald Tribune, covering many major world events and conflicts. Lara has received four press awards for her work for The Irish Times and was also awarded a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur for her contribution to Franco-Irish relations. In 2020, she published the best-selling memoir Love in a Time of War, My Years with Robert Fisk.

Eve Patten is Director of the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute and Professor of English at Trinity College, Dublin. She lectures and writes in the area of nineteenth and twentieth-century British and Irish literary history and has a special interest in the literature of war. Her most recent book is Ireland, Revolution, and the English Modernist Imagination (2022), and previous publications include Imperial Refugee: Olivia Manning's Fictions of War (2012), and, as co-editor with Richard Pine, Literatures of War (2008).
