Bruckner's ﻿Adagio from Symphony No. 8 ﻿has been arranged by Randall Malmstrom for an 8-part Trombone Ensemble. The Adagio is noteworthy in being the longest slow movement in the musical repertoire and the only work of his that uses a harp and cymbals. This beautiful 6-minute fragment is lush, deeply spiritual, solemn and warm. This movement is the central core of the entire work. It is appropriate for advanced performers.

Part 8 may be performed on a contrabass trombone for added depth.

George Job Elvey's musical setting from his St. George's Windsor hymn tune composition was set to words by Henry Alford and it produced the beautiful and festive Thanksgiving prelude Come,Ye Thankful People, Come. This great work has been beautifully arranged by Russell McKinney for 8-part Antiphonal Trombone Ensemble.

It is all in bass clef and perfect for intermediate to moderately advanced performers. The great performance is by the arranger himself, Russell McKinney performing all parts in a special studio recording produced during the Covid epidemic.

Sea Drift by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is an a cappella choir piece written in 1908 based on a poem by the American writer Thomas Bailey Aldrich. The music is dark and ominous, perfectly suited for the arranger Richard Decker to set for an 8-part Trombone Ensemble of moderately advanced performers.

The instrumentation of this 5-minute work is for 6 Tenor Trombones (part 1 optional alto) and 2 Bass Trombones (part 8 optional contrabass).

Sea Drift

Trombone Bells for Christmas for 6-part Trombone Ensemble is a unique and great sounding arrangement by Tommy Copper of two traditional Christmas carols: Carol of the Bells and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Both being in a quick 3/4 time make them perfect together. Tommy uses bell tones from the ensemble to create a magical atmosphere for the listener.

Appropriate for moderately advanced to advanced performers, the instrumentation is for 4 tenor trombones (parts 1 & 2 in tenor clef) and 2 bass trombones.

My latest overdub is of "Rey's Theme" and "Kylo Ren's Theme" as heard in the closing titles to "Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens." These 2 characters represent the conflict which is central in the story unfolding in the latest Star Wars trilogy. As usual, John Williams paints a lasting and powerful portrait of these characters through his amazing score.

John Mackey is a composer currently based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  He's also lived in New York, Austin, Los Angeles, and Ohio, but he prefers not to talk about Ohio.

As a frequent collaborator, John has worked with a diverse range of artists, from the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps to choreographer David Parsons, from the Alvin Ailey Dance Company to the US Olympic Synchronized Swim Team. (The team won a bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics performing to Mackey's work for clarinet and percussion, "Damn.")

John has served as a Meet-The-Composer/American Symphony Orchestra League Composer In Residence with the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphony and with the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. He has been Composer In Residence at the Vail Valley Music Festival in Vail, Colorado, and in 2005, at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music.  He returns to Cabrillo this summer for  performances of his trombone concerto, "Harvest," conducted by Marin Alsop, with trombonist Joseph Alessi of the New York Philharmonic.

John holds degrees from The Juilliard School and The Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with John Corigliano and Donald Erb, respectively.

Kurt M. Landré 

Born in the dimming haze of the latter half of the late 20th Century, Landré's musical fate was sealed even before his birth when his mother began pushing the family piano around the living room in an attempt to induce a fruitful end to her 10-month pregnancy. Landré apparently got the message and found his way into this world the very next day, with piano moving lessons following just a few years later. 

He was afterwards raised on a steady musical diet of Bach, Beatles, Beethoven, Chicago, Rossini, Three Dog Night, and the raw, pure horror of live, dueling accordion music (and yes, there were many fatalities). After his first musical forays into classical piano and cello, he discovered synthesizers in the mid 80's and his tastes began rapidly migrating from New Wave, to Punk, to modern classical composition.

Landré's formal education consisted of stints at Pacific Lutheran and the University of Oregon, where he annoyed all his professors with a continual and unyielding insistence on parallel fifths in every composition. Finally, in a desperate attempt to get himself barred from all things musical, he began playing Post Pop Punk and quickly devolved into a cruel Pacific Northwest caricature of an over-caffeinated, rim-spectacled, folk-strumming-three-chord monstrosity. He is most famous for having blackened the jubilant mood of a crowd of over 1000 people after striking only a single, well-timed chord on a poorly tuned mandolin.

Having fully alienated all popular music lovers worldwide, Landré returned to his roots and began composing music for entirely virtual orchestras, and quickly established himself as a demo composer, creating works for sound library companies such as Impact Soundworks, CL-Projects, Samplism, Lux Nox, Versilian Studios, and others. 

He is currently the House Composer for Bela D. Media, but can be still found attempting to strangle and torture the joy and happiness out of numerous acoustic instruments.

James Nova joined the Grammy award-winning Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 2009 as second/utility trombone. In 2012, Nova made his solo debut with the PSO, performing Henri Tomasi’s Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra. Prior to that, he was a member of the Utah Symphony Orchestra where he served eight seasons as assistant principal/second trombone. 
 
Since 2012, James Nova has found a new passion in multitrack recording, also known as "overdubbing." Overdubbing is a process by which a musician records all the parts of a piece of music one by one and layers the recordings on top of each other to create a full ensemble. Nova has released dozens of stunning and virtuosic tracks of his own challenging arrangements of exciting repertoire for trombone choir. The arrangements employ many different trombones: contra bass, bass, tenor, small tenor, alto, and even soprano trombones!
 
James Nova has had a lifelong love of John Williams’ film scores and in December of 2017, he released a new overdub album for trombone choir, A Fall from Light to Dark. Through the chosen moments of John Williams’ masterful scores, this album musically chronicles the rise and descent of Anakin Skywalker as he transforms into Darth Vader. Truly a one-man show, this album’s transcriptions, playing, recording, editing, mixing, and mastering were all done by Nova himself.

James Nova has always been passionate about music education. When not on stage at Heinz Hall with the Pittsburgh Symphony, he can be found at the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University where he is adjunct trombone faculty, as well as the brass coach of the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestras. Given their widespread popularity, Nova’s recordings are playing an impactful role in inspiring the next generation of musicians and budding recording artists and he is frequently invited to teach outside the region. Since 2012, he has completed more than 85 visits to prominent festivals (such as the International Trombone Festival, American Trombone Workshop, and the Korea Trombone Festival, among others) and reputable educational institutions (such as the Curtis Institute of Music, Juilliard School of Music, and New England Conservatory, among others) as the featured artist and educator in concerts, masterclasses, and clinics.

James Nova studied with Glenn Dodson at the Curtis Institute of Music followed by study with Norman Bolter at the New England Conservatory of Music. While in Boston, Nova played regularly with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops Orchestra, including recordings and television broadcasts as both principal and second trombone.
