A hybrid interview and listening session with Satch Hoyt on the release of Un-Muting, distributed by Honest Jon's. 

Born in London of British and Jamaican ancestry, Satch is a visual artist and musician in the body and mind of a spiritualist: a believer in both ritual and retention. Working in sculpture, installation, painting, sound, and performance, Hoyt directs these mediums towards the same end: the search for what he calls the “Eternal Afro-Sonic Signifer,” a “mnemonic network of sounds” that enslaved Africans carried with them during the forced migration of the Middle Passage. 

In 2019, Hoyt staged Afro-Sonic Mapping at Berlin's House of World Cultures  (HKW),  a multifaceted project of sonic restitution grounded in his recovery of some of the earliest wax cylinder recordings from Angola and the Congo housed in the Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv. Since then, Hoyt has turned his attention to African and Afro-Diasporic musical instruments in western museum collections. Like wax cylinders, dormant instruments can be resonified or "un-muted" to make their longed-for return to the present-future. For Hoyt, these instruments are ancestors whose original role was to communicate with Orishas and other ancestral kin. 

Based on his un-mutings at the British Museum, Hoyt recently produced an immersive sound installation surrounded by a series of his paintings for the exhibition Your Ears Later Will Know to Listen at Nottingham Contemporary. Just last month, the original sound commission was released by traza as a beautiful 10” vinyl LP (link to vinyl and digitial download in the cart icon above).

I sat down with Satch over Zoom to discuss his origins, artistic practice, and his experience encountering instrument-ancestors in the British Museum's collections storage. In between you’ll hear both sides of his latest Un-muting release.

The Garland Trap

-Trumpets Rev. 8:12 - 1/3 sun smitten and moon darkened. Something blocking a portion very close and stationary. Stars as well, so 1/3 of sky in essence. Will lose 1/3 of day and night, so something parks close. Something could have happened ages ago now arriving. - 1/3 of trees burned and all grass are multiple land masses. Rain hail fire and blood. Heavens will change in a chain of events. Israeli prophecy before blood rain about rocks singing out. Strange possibilities and explanations for these events. Destructive eras cycle. Sexual mix-ups accompany. Loss of respect, distrust of leaders. Populations and birth rates get low. Knowledge is lost. Earth degrades.
-Hopi prophecy and what's said are different. 
- God's gifts aren't for gain or profit. Use for righteousness. 
- Monuments to calendars for remote generations. Even the Pantheon, Mithra's. Used poems and songs too. Ring around the Rosie about black plague. Stories of Hercules, Medusa speak to end days and torments. 
- CERN desperate search. Magnets are biggest discovery/invention. They will undo themselves. 
- 3rd trumpet- Cyanide and arsenic can come in on a great star to hurt 1/3 rivers and waters. Wormwood. Aerial burst. Meteorite? 
- 5th Trumpet- Another possible impact with a release. "Key" not original wording. Abyss is bottomless pit. Smoke comes out with locusts. Ancient army sealed inside Earth by 2 mountains. Magma will alter effecting release. Turkey has a weird cavern no one can approach. At a certain point, there are no righteous left. 144,000 have a seal because they have no relationship with Christ. 
- We're only accountable for what we know.

Last song was made for an internet like area, since it's inside a computer. Unfortunately, I really had to rush this one since we had very little time, so I made a simple loop. I'm actually a bit surprised that the Dev really liked this song and that it's his favorite out of the OST.

Instrumental track with a strong presence of trumpets (brass), delivering an energetic and dynamic sound.

The creation of Bon Voyage - including composition, instrumentation, mixing, and mastering - took approximately five weeks. The initial idea for the track was developed on the piano. Although the original piano-based version (Melody-10-2025) is fully present in the final production, it sounds completely different from the current result. This is mainly due to the trumpets and the rest of the instrumentation, which significantly transformed the overall character of the piece.

The cover artwork for the track was entirely hand-drawn on paper by Rosi (11 years old), then digitized and lightly refined afterward.
