Here's my entry for the OSC #200 challenge. A few people in our OSC Discord responded enthusiastically when I said I was planning to make a contemporary hippie piece. A promise is a promise. Dr Bob immediately sent me live recordings of his band from the good old days. But with my background, with Zebralette and the OSC rules, I can't quite match that. But don't worry, I've tried to capture the spirit of the Flower Power generation which was great fun.

The Fifth Dawn

Hello!

Another track! This time I wanted to explore the darker side of synthwave. It's similar to darksynth with a bit of a cyberpunk feel.

Actually, I wanted to make a track with synths reminiscent of 80s horror movies, which is why I used almost exclusively the u-he suite (Diva, Hive 2, Repro 5, etc.), moog and jupiter 8, which has a very analog sound typical of this genre.

I had fun adding lots of detail to the rhythm section with both organic and completely digital percussion.

As for the track's context, I imagined a modern post-apocalyptic/cyberpunk world ravaged by a rage virus ☠️ ( That's why I used such a dramatic title 😆 ).

Extraction Point

Luminescence began as a sudden spark of creativity inspired by the soundtrack to Marty Supreme and the acoustic guitar work of Ichiko Aoba’s Windswept Adan. The piece opens with the intimate sound of a fingerpicked electric guitar, which I performed myself, before gradually expanding to include dry solo strings. The ensemble slowly builds in density and scale before ultimately exploding into a lush blur of string textures and synthesizers — prominently featuring u-he’s remarkably organic sounding Zebralette 3.

By far, the most demanding aspect of production was recording guitar, especially as a non-guitarist. Not only did I struggle with the hand-cramping physical toll of the instrument, but I also encountered recurring intonation issues and a tendency to over-grip the fretboard. This resulted in many takes where the tuning in the upper strings drifted upwards. Regarding recording, in order to capture the most immersive sound possible, I opted for a hybrid recording technique, blending a direct line input with close stereo mics pointed at the guitar body to capture the intimate acoustic details.

Beyond the piece’s extensive exploration of Zebralette 3 and Diva synthesizers, my most serendipitous discovery was applying high-speed arpeggiators to my orchestral samples, resulting in a flurry of rhythmic textures blending synth-like accuracy with acoustic integrity (in this case, rapid arpeggiations of pizzicato violins, overblown flutes, and flute tongue-rams as percussion).
