Tom Steenburgh, Ralph Owen Dean and Professor of Marketing (since July 2023) at Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management. He's an expert in business-to-business marketing and sales, and believes in the power of collaboration between academics and business leaders to explore novel research ideas and solve real-world problems.

Prior to coming to Owen, Dean Steenburgh served as the Richard S. Reynolds Professor and Senior Associate Dean of the Full-Time Program at the Darden School of Business. Before joining Darden, he was on the faculty at the Harvard Business School where he developed electives and led executive education courses in business-to-business marketing and sales. Tom Steenburgh is a co-founder of the Thought Leadership on the Sales Profession conference, a unique event that brings together leading academics and senior business leaders to discuss cutting-edge ideas and practices in sales.

Tom bring his deep experience in business-to-business marketing and strategizing to our conversation, where the focus is on such topics as:

After 45 years with the company, 42 of which in motorsports and 26 in NASCAR, Goodyear's Greg Stucker is calling it a career. Goodyear Tire & Rubber's Director of Racing joins Davey Segal ahead of his retirement (5:55) to discuss how he got involved in motorsports with Goodyear after graduating from Vanderbilt, learning racing on the fly with little prior knowledge and getting thrown into the fire from short tracks to IndyCar.

Stucker also dives into some major takeaways from 2024, including the use of wet weather tires and potential future use of them on intermediates, option tires and how soft of a compound they can actually make, what happened at spring Bristol (if they even know, still) and the differences in concrete vs. asphalt as it pertains to tire wear and temperature.

He also reminisces about the good and bad days on the job, including the 2008 Brickyard 400 and why that wound up changing things for the better with their processes, tire wars in the 1990s, the famous Goodyear Blimp, gold car and the meaningful styory behind his patented aviators at the track.

Cannabis, cannabinoids, and cannabimimetics like Delta-8 and THC-P and more are increasingly common across America, including in the state of Tennessee, where we have passed numerous regulations on the industry in recent years. And in states where cannabis has been fully legalized, some products containing Delta-9 THC, the psychoactive ingredient of what is defined in Tennessee state law as marijuana, the concentrations have grown to historically unprecedented levels, with some products boasting 90-95% potency. 

Despite the widespread availability of high-THC cannabis products, however, it seems the general conversation around the safety and efficacy of these substances remains grounded in a lot of misunderstandings. Not to mention a lack of awareness about the concerning side effects of these high-potency synthetically manipulated products, which are not at all like the cannabis of the ‘90s or earlier. 

My guest this month is Dr. Kristen Gilliland, Director of Outreach and Advocacy Programs and Assistant Professor of Research at the Warren Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery at Vanderbilt University. On top of an extensive career in the field, Dr. Gilliland tragically lost her son to a drug overdose in 2019, a couple of years after he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Now, Dr. Gilliland works to provide innovative, evidence-based, and compassionate prevention education to teens about the reality of the modern cannabis market, which has been significantly changed since it became a legal, corporatized, and multibillion dollar industry.
