Mission Impossible 7: Dead Reckoning Part 1 Oscar Profile - Ep 441

While we are usually trying to tie deep cuts from our physical collections into the topical release of the week around here, this week on the show we celebrate the release of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One by, well, watching and talking about it immediately upon its release, as it makes a direct line into the hallowed annals of the ADHD-DVD canon. It's the podcast's most anticipated movie of the summer, and we go nearly two hours breaking it at all down, so strap in for spoilerific discussion on 2023's M:I-DRP1, directed and co-written by Christopher McQuarrie, starring Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Esai Morales, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Carey Elwes and Shea Whigham. It's a movie we both enjoyed enormously and strongly recommend you catch in theatres -- something you may wish to do before listening to our discussion.

Today, we are reviewing the newest film from director Ridley Scott, "Napoleon," starring Joaquin Phoenix, Vanessa Kirby, and Tahar Rahim. Based on the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, the historical epic contains large battle scenes, petulant behavior, coup d'états, marital drama, and enough Joaquin Phoenix memes to last us a lifetime. The film is an odd mixture of tones, creative ambition, and misfires. What did we ultimately think of it, though? Together, we ask whether Scott's film has anything to say about the man whose life it depicts - and if so what? - whether its ahistoricity matters, and how substantially it fleshes out its characters and the events and relationships dramatised.

The Fantastic Four Cast for the 2025 MCU Film

This week, SepTIMEber concludes with another charming British time travel rom-com that segues into fam-dram territory before it reaches the finish line. It's 2013's About Time, written and directed by Richard Curtis, and starring Domhnall Gleason, Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy, Tom Hollander, Margot Robbie, Lydia Wilson, Vanessa Kirby and an uncredited Richard E. Grant. It's once again the final Friday of the month, as even this theme month can not stop the inexorable march of time, and Hayley's got the keys to the vault this time around, as she's chosen to nominate a cozy comfort film that's come to mean a great deal to her over the last decade. It's a cute movie with a sharp premise that plays a bit like if Edge of Tomorrow was a romantic comedy -- at least as far as it's interested in being a romantic comedy, anyway. We debate, as always.

If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, About Time is not currently available to stream in Canada at the time of publication, but is rentable on YouTube, Cineplex and Amazon. And you can nab it for $5 on DVD at your local Sunrise Records.

Episode 1008: The Fantastic Four: First Steps

"Eden" is an American survival thriller film directed by Ron Howard and written by Noah Pink from a story by Pink and Howard. It stars Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Sydney Sweeney, Daniel Brühl, Felix Kammerer, Toby Wallace, and Richard Roxburgh. It is based on the true story of a few European settlers arriving at Floreana Island, in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it received mixed positive reviews for its dark story and performances. Howard was kind enough to speak with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below.
