'No Cages' is my third album, and my first in seven years. 

It features the singles 'Simple Life' and 'Incomplete'.

It is my first collection of predominantly animal rights songs and covers topics such as intensive chicken farming, toxic masculinity, humane-washing / greenwashing, and the perception of vegans by a non-vegan world. The project also covers other themes such as loss and loneliness, how technology is disconnecting us from the real world, escaping from the human race, and the beauty of the ground beneath our feet.

It has been a labour of love, taking over two years to complete, delayed by various set-backs, most noticeably damage to my vocal chords. 

The album features over 40 contributors from across the world, including Vegan Queen V, Liz Mitchell (Terrorvision), Ian Haywood, Giles Bryant, and Chaos Collective (Blur). It was recorded at Half-ton Studios in Milton by Neil Rogers, mastered by Pete Maher (U2, Pixies), and features artwork by Tom Jones.

efbach_kurtäns was devised and processed in June 2025.
in November i dismantled it, cleaned and oiled all the machine's parts, and put it back together – differently.

an exercise on feedback and oscillators, efbach_kurtäns is probably the one piece with highest track-count of bruno lorso's whole catalogue.

...frozen-still, picture-like-static, yet tonally-shifting, with spectrum's regions morphing and asynchronous beats pulsating, there's only level curves assigned across all of them nine tracks to do the job, on efbach_kurtäns.

something else makes it indeed atypical, in bruno lorso's catalogue: there's no reverberation added, no dynamic-range doctoring, not an iota of delay... it's the real vegetable in your dish – sans dressing.

...ghost-like, suspended, not triggering any reminiscence of melody or harmony – there's a reason (and not just one alone) for efbach_kurtäns to be its own thing: summer came, scaring the berufus out of me, what with apocalyptic news from the world, and the psychic effect of summer temperatures... then went, and things weren't in any way better, except cooler.

efbach_kurtäns proves there can be a container for the tide of depression that resists the highs and lows of summer inevitability and inhabitability – made with sound, made of sound, but a safe place (in my mind) nonetheless – which serves as a shelter when the fall season events spook me nonetheless.

i've been pulled to, and driven by, sound, and sounds, since i can try to remember. 

and, while technically a former sound engineer (since more than three decades at that), it shows i've yet to off that switch in my head.

sound shapes my mood, my feelings, my heart rate, my life – it sure does the same to you, of course, just as it does to any other human and living being, at most diverse degrees of self-awareness, on the compass' dial of perception.

i've been playing and singing since kindergarten, like no other place on earth was an harbor, my harbor – and, not that clever a guess, sound engineering became my job, my career, and my obsession, eventually. 

until i served musicians and music in my sound engineering days, i vowed myself to silence, to start making music again only after i quitted miking and mixing – though all over from scratch now, no tracing back my steps, no memory of what i'd been studying, learning and playing, thirty or forty years before – or yesterday evening, for what matters now.

Where is the nexus between Philosophy and Psychology? Where they meet is where I live. Both tell their own story, and so only both together offer us a full vision. Come with me as we explore that through music, questions, storytelling, and conversations. Whether it's the cold hard truth, or a poison that lingers until it takes effect, either way you like it, you're going to get the picture.

Gavin Chappell-Bates is a vegan indie-alternative-pop-rocker from Cambridgeshire, England. His music has featured on BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio 2. He released his debut album ‘We Are The Ones’ in 2016, on R*E*P*E*A*T Records, followed up by his second album 'The Last One' in 2018. 

Gavin also co-founded Peace On Your Plate, a vegan musical collective, who made it to number 40 in the UK downloads chart in Xmas 2019 with a song of the same name. The collective followed this up with a full album ‘The Forest Garden’. He was also part of an electro-grunge duo, Star Pixel, who released the album ‘Hadron Kaleidoscope’ in 2022.
