Supporting veterans’ mental health: lifestyle strategies

Delissa Chase grew up around horses in Oklahoma. Little did she now that these beautiful creatures would one day save her life and put her on a path to rescue horses that had been abused.
A Naval veteran, upon returning home she was diagnosed with PTSD and major anxiety disorders. She spent several years struggling as a disabled veteran which at one point led her to become homeless. While living in her car, she set three goals - to buy land, start a ranch and provide equine therapy.
In 2022 she founded Whispering Sands Sanctuary dedicated to helping and saving horses who have endured abuse, neglect and ultimately would be slaughtered for profit. The Sanctuary's  equine-assisted programs aim to empower Veterans and others diagnosed with PTSD, positively affecting their cognitive, physical and social well-being.
Delissa believes that horses are truly a gift for all of humanity because of the incredible healing abilities, compassion, strength and, the valuable lessons they share with us.
