‘I’ll Never Forgive’ is a soundscape which explores the final years of Sunderland’s collieries – and what it means to be part of a coalfield community now that the mines are long gone. It traces a painful journey through the 84-85 Miners’ Strike to the closure of the pits through the words of people who have lived it. The soundscape also features dramatic readings of verbatim poetry written by Louise Powell for the Coal Face exhibition at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens.

‘Coal Face: I’ll Never Forgive’ is a soundscape designed, edited and produced by Nick John Williams, to a script which was written and curated by Louise Powell. It features recordings of Powell’s poems ‘Women In A Man’s World, Part 2: Mary, In the Canteen’, ‘Strike’, ‘Women In A Man’s World, Part 3: Muriel, In the Wages Office’, ‘Closure’, ‘Everybody’ and ‘Disclosure’. The poetry was read by the actors Angela Rose and John McMahon.

It also features clips from interviews with John Lonsdale, Graeme Hopper, Henry Kirtley, Bob Heron, Caroline Ramshaw, Muriel Tully, Billy Crowe, Ian High, Juliana Heron, George Sanderson, Paula Short, Tom Watson, Dave Anderson, Bill Sheriff, David Chambers, Dennis O’Brien, Colin Eddy, Martin Chapman, Alan Mardghum, Linda Chapman, David Thacker, Lynne Ford and Terry Watkin. Additional audio was recorded by Andy Martin.

‘Coal Face: I’ll Never Forgive’ is the third in a series of 3 soundscapes which have been created to accompany the Coal Face exhibition at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens. The exhibition and project are supported using public funding from Arts Council England, and delivered in partnership with Sunderland Culture, The Cultural Spring, Redhills Durham and University College London.

Our March 2025 ‘Monthly Techno Mixshow’ features a ninety-minute mix from Liz Somes.

The moment Liz Somes mixed her first two tracks, her mind switched off and the music took control. But the Seattle artist’s next chapter is far more deliberate. She intends for her fearless approach as an artist to carry on techno’s historic legacy as an inclusive safe space where groundbreaking ideas can take form.

Liz selects all of her music by ear, seldom paying any mind to the names on a given record. She produces thought-provoking tracks of her own — such as the corrosive “Mental Chaos” or hair-raising “The Unknown” — without trying to cater to popular labels. Her refusal to conform has paid off. A 2023 winner of the Pete Tong DJ Academy Future Talent and Sama Abdulhadi’s Personal Award, Liz Somes is now a familiar face behind the decks on several continents.

It is at this crucial impasse that too many artists falter and start playing it safe, afraid to risk their mounting momentum. Not Liz Somes. She’s only just begun to explore the shrouded depths of her sound signature, calling back from the abyss at every purposeful step. Her commitment harks back to a time when techno broke the rules and contemplated a distant future. As far as she’s concerned, it always should.

These concepts are second nature to Liz, as revolutionary as they may seem. She follows the sound, honest and unyielding, faithful that all the rest will fall into place.
