Douglas J Institute Rebrands, Moves Away from Exclusive Aveda Partnership Across all MI and TN Locations

This switch gives students access to broader training through a multi-product educational approach, fully preparing them for the realities of today’s salon environment. 

East Lansing, Mich., Aug. 20, 2025 – After more than 30 years with the Aveda name, Douglas J is moving forward from its exclusive partnership and rebranding itself as Douglas J Institute, with a multi-line product education across each of its locations. With presence in Grand Rapids, Mich., East Lansing, Mich., Ann Arbor, Mich., Royal Oak, Mich., Knoxville, Tenn., and two recently acquired locations in Lincoln, NE., the educational group is pivoting to feature several product lines for students to utilize, learn specialized techniques from, and retail to guests. 

“We couldn’t be more excited about what this means for the students and their future education,” said Scott Weaver, president of Douglas J Companies. “While it was a good run with Aveda, they didn’t make us what we have become today. It’s always been about the people — extending our education model with new product lines and continuing to focus on the people side of the business, is really what fires me up and excites all of us for the future.” 

Douglas J Institutes will now use Back of Bottle, Color Space (color), Davines, and Mizani for hair care services and retail, and offer PCA Skin and Eminence for skin care offerings. While this is an initial launch, the team will continue to stay flexible, with potential to add in new and trending lines in the future for students to utilize. With Douglas J now offering distribution for Back of Bottle (BOB) and Color Space products, this shift also strengthens these brands within communities where there’s Douglas J presence, bringing additional awareness to these high performing, clean products. 

Founded in 1967 by Doug Weaver, Douglas J Salon eventually grew to launch their first spa in the 70’s, and into the institute education model in 1986. In 1993, Douglas J partnered with Aveda to launch their education program. Today, the company is run by President Scott Weaver and Vice President TJ Weaver, Doug’s two sons. 

Douglas J is a family-owned company spanning four generations over more than 55 years and consisting of eight institute and four salon locations across Michigan, Tennessee and Nebraska. BIO:

My passion for music, especially rave stems from a young age. I got my first pair of Numark turntables for my birthday at the age of 13, and I've never looked back! I started mixing Makina, and a little bit of bounce too. I invested in a set of Technics at around the age of 16, and started to take my mixing more seriously, with a lot of practice, and others showing me how to beatmatch properly. At 18 my love for hardcore was reignited, and I started buying hardcore vinyl. With hardcore vinyl pressing in the decline, i took the decision at around 20 to go into the world of digital Dj'ing, and i invested in my first pair of CDJ's. Since then i have upgraded a couple of times, and i now use a pair of Pioneer CDJ 2000's, which i have had for around 7 or 8 years now. I'll try my hand at pretty much any music style, but my main love is for hardcore & makina. Feel free to ask any questions, don't forget to like and share if you listen and enjoy my mixes! Here’s a little bio. 

I bought my first set of turntables at the age of 14 when I was already collecting Happy Hardcore records. DJing was one of those things that just come naturally to me. My friends were always over at my house for mixing sessions. At 16 I started playing alongside my brother and friends every fortnight at a local bar for an under 18’s night playing Happy Hardcore. Two years later, out of a thousand entrants my mix tape came top five in the ‘Ministry Of Sound DJ Of The Year’. I played a live vinyl set in Topshop situated in London’s Oxford Street, on a busy Saturday afternoon. I continued entering DJ competitions and talent nights along with a mid-week slot at a local bar. At 20, I was given full weekend residency at my local nightclub Steam, playing Old-Skool, House and Trance. In the next two years I reached the final of the ‘Young DJ Of The Year’ competitions, which were run by the Staffordshire & Cheshire’s number one radio station, Signal 1. I came out as overall winner of the competition in 2002. My prize was my first ever pair of Technics 1210’s (which I still use), mixer, flight cases and the opportunity to play a live set at Café Mambo in Ibiza. The win also landed me a set at the opening night of the Stoke club, Lomax, for the ‘Youth Upfront Awards’. I then tried to further my career by signing onto the internet DJ agencies, 'Topjox' and 'Club Dreams', sending out demos to gain recognition. In the early summer of 2004 I decide to try my luck by booking a one way ticket to Ibiza for the season. It was tough at first, but by the end of July I had a residency at the brilliant Plastik Lounge in San Antonio. After a few weeks playing with some of San An’s finest house DJ’s, I was given the chance to warm up the decks in Es Paradis funky lounge. But best of all, after weeks of trying, Alex Ellenger, who with Judge Jules ran the funky room in Eden, give me the finest two hours of my DJ career by asking me to play a set. The next year I returned to Ibiza and became one of the residents in the swanky new Hush bar in San Antonio's west end. When I came back to England I started my own night in a local bar. I then became one of the Tech-House/Hard House residents for my brother's local club night ‘Euphonic Fuzion’. 

Even though I enjoy playing many styles of dance music, I've never lost my passion for Happy Hardcore. It will forever be the biggest part of me musically and that's why I created this page. To share the love for this incredible music.

Bridge is a DJ and electronic music enthusiast who has been consistently building his musical career for years. He began his journey behind the decks two decades ago, and in 2010, he became the runner-up in the Podkarpacie DJ Championship, which opened the door to new stages and clubs.

He is the creator of his own podcast, Sunday Soundscapes, where he presents the most interesting shades of house and techno, while maintaining a vibrant atmosphere and musical cohesion. He regularly collaborates with London-based station Saturo Sounds, ensuring his sets reach listeners worldwide.

Bridge is also a member of the Lucid collective, whose mission is to promote Polish DJs and producers. He is also developing the duo 2Nite with Funky M., where both DJs combine their styles to create energetic, groove-filled sets.
