In chapter 13 of John's gospel, we see the steady determination of Jesus, in spite of everything he will face on his journey to the cross.  He is always reliable, yet he is also able to surprise his followers as he kneels and washes their feet.  He makes it clear that he is setting an example for his disciples to follow: an example of humility.
