This is the tenth entry in my Amherst series, blending music and civic storytelling. The song responds to the Mass Ready Act, a bill that could drastically reduce local authority over wetlands protection. I wrote it after reading about the issue in the Amherst Indy.

This one’s written in the protest folk tradition—direct, urgent, and grounded in place. Public comment deadline is July 29.

Amherst Wetlands Plea

Fr Michael Long is a director  and volunteer at the community-led Cabragh Wetlands Centre.  He was one of our guest speakers at the International Bog Day event at the National Library in Seamus Heaney 'Listen Now Again' exhibition venue on July 26th. We asked him about the wetlands - and why they are important. 
Tóchar Stories is part of Tóchar Midlands Wetland Restoration a three year scheme to restoration wetlands ( bogs, fens etc) in the Irish Midlands under the Just Transition Programme in Ireland. Tóchar is co funded by the Irish Government and EU and managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service

'What did we do, when we knew?" is the powerful question posed by Michael Long at the end of his presentation. Not knowing is no longer our excuse in climate, environment or biodiversity crises - so what we do and how we respond is the challenge. 
Fr Michael Long is a volunteer and Director at Cabragh Wetlands Trust, Tipperary. Cabragh Wetlands is a story of community activism to protect nature, biodiversity and place where the local people stood up to defend the conservation of the area as a nature reserve after the closure of the Sugar factory in Thurles when the view was the land would become a municipal dump. Michael Long has worked not just to protect and restore nature, biodiversity and land but to ensure Cabragh Wetlands, as a community-led initiative, becomes a place of learning and engagement for all on our relationship with nature. Michael was one of our guest speakers at our July 26th National Library Bogland - Between the sights of the sun - event for International Bog Day - hosted in partnership with the National Library and with the Seamus Heaney 'Listen Now Again' exhibition. We took Heaney's poem 'Bogland' as our frame and inspiration and Michael, in his presentation, shared his own approach to wetlands restoration and how people, places and nature are intrinsically interwoven and interconnected. Our future rests on how we restore not just the land, like wetlands, but our relationship, our 'earth literacy' with nature and our planet.

Michael Long - Cabragh Wetlands - Bogland presentation July 26 2025

Seamus Corcoran is Chair of the Lemanaghan Heritage and Bog Conservation Group and we invited him to be one of our guest speakers at the Bogland - between the sights of the sun - International Bog Day event on July 26 2025 in the National Library. Seamus is a local historian who shared the rich heritage and archeology of his place, and the story of the early Christian treasures which have been found buried and preserved in the bog there. 
Lemanaghan community has a long running campaign to oppose the proposed BnM wind farm on Lemanaghan which was a cut peatlands bog under Bord na Móna. For Seamus and many of his neighbours in the area the land there has already contributed enough, has been harvested enough, and they wish to see it conserved and the archaeological riches that may be buried within the bog preserved and saved. 
In this audio version of the presentation by Seamus - Helen Shaw - Tóchar Stories curator introduces him to the live audience in the Seamus Heaney Listen Now Again exhibition venue space and starts by asking him about what the bog and the concept of the boglands means to him.

Jane and Mike were nearly washed away on the Saturday, as it rained continuously in Salford UK, running down the gutters and forming small lakes along the gutters and pavements. So next day, Sunday, they travelled down to Kersal to see if the Flood Basin was full of rainwater. Strangely, it was not. The sun was shining, there were geese on the wetlands and people playing on the grass. It was (almost) back to normal, on this glorious Autumn day. (But we talked about previous floods in Salford, when things weren't so nice.)
