Costa Rica's rainforests are lively and active at night, even if it might not seem like it. A night walk in the jungle will reveal countless creatures going about their business - hunting or trying to avoid hunters, looking for food and sometimes searching for a mate. Underwater sounds of freshwater shrimp munching (or, trying to munch) on hydrophones. Not clear whether it is the invasive 'Gammarus pulex' or the native 'Gammarus duebeni celticus' species.

FRESHWATER SHRIMP Munching

’Stridulation’, we find, is one of those beautifully descriptive words. Much like crickets or cicadas on solid ground, aquatic invertebrates produce an array of sounds by rubbing their body parts, know as stridulations. These together with the sounds of chewing, grazing, amphibian vocalisations and even plants oxygenating, create rich underwater soundscapes. In this extract you can mainly hear aquatic bug stridulations. But if you listen carefully with the help of headphones, you can also  make out faint munching and the odd low grunt (possibly from an amphibian such as a frog). You can also make out the breeze on the hydrophone cables, creating ripples on the water surface which presumably filter down underwater. And towards the end of the file, human sounds from children playing nearby.

Surprisingly, we still have plenty of winter thrushes still around, in April! and still no Swallows seen, despite the fact that we had one of the hottest Marches on record, no doubt followed by -5 at the start of April.. so they clearly new the cold snap wasn't over yet. 

Nice to hear them singing away, but mostly still subsong as apposed to their territorial breeding song, which they have no purpose to really sing just yet as they are not on territory.

My recordings from the upper peninsula are not useable because some type of critter thought it would be fun to chew the microphone cable. I didn’t notice until I got back to Traverse City, but I had to order a replacement cable. Of the 30 hours of recorded files, I could only salvage what you heard in the episode last week. As you know, I went to the eastern UP hoping to record wolves. The good? I found the wolves and tracked them for two days before setting up my recorders. The bad? They are very elusive and difficult to capture on “tape”. I have a few seconds of what might be a howl, but it is distant and could also be a Common Loon. 

Welcome to the 17th episode of the Nature is my Jam podcast! Because of some technical difficulties while I was in the upper peninsula, I had to dig into some older files for this week’s episode. Not to fear, though. We are in Leelanau County again and we are going to be spoiled with a menagerie of bird calls recorded in an open meadow. How many birds make up a menagerie?? I don’t know that answer but we have 10 birds for the price of admission. And not just any birds. We are talking Common Yellowthroats, Magnolia Warblers, Black-capped Chickadees, Pileated Woodpeckers, Red-shouldered Hawks, Blue Jays (song and calls!), Crows, and more. 

Northport is a tiny village near the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula that has beautiful rolling hills, forests, farmland and perhaps my favorite, expansive open meadows that soak up the sun and play host to a who’s who of Northern Michigan wildlife. This recording, as I mentioned above, is very much bird forward to the listening palate.

17 - Field Recording: Yellowthroats, Hawks, Chickadees and Warblers

Spring full moon tides are usually much higher and lower turning gentle flowing brackish creeks into rushing rivers. This audio is one hour of outgoing tidal flow's rushing water sounds along with Pig Frogs, Leopard Frogs, a few Green Tree Frogs calling.  Shorebirds, songbirds, crickets and the occasional overhead airplane and nearby fishing boat contribute to the rest of the full moon marsh audio. Recording rushing water audio is challenging however I find the sounds ground me with the earth (after all our bodies are mostly water).  The Pig Frogs are the perfect bass accompaniment while Leopard Frogs call with out their soprano melodies. I hear Red-winged Blackbirds throughout along with a number of shorebirds.  Mole crickets and Southern Field Crickets round out the recording. The St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge is always in earth & wildlife orchestra mode. Tidal Creek's Full Moon Flow, Frogs, Shorebirds & Crickets

Just past midnight the wild pigs saunter down to the marshy edge of SMNWR's Headquarters Pond ready for a sweet drink of water after a long night of rutting in the wildlife refuge mud.  They should have learned by now that some of the biggest marsh alligators lay motionless in the mud just inches from the shoreline; hungry and patiently waiting.  As one of the most spectacular hunters of the swamps and marshes, mature alligators can leap and grab faster than the blink of an eye (I've seen them climb a chain link fence). This two minute audio captures the midnight alligator's lunge and grab and the pig's last screams as it is taken down into the depths of the swampy water. ΩM.AIRA...making acoustic landscape records

Most of these recordings are made in the Doñana National Park for the Integrated sound and landscape  project: ('Estudio integral sobre Sonido y Paisaje -2020.06 ). Support from Vienna Academy of the Fine Arts provided a research grant facilitated through Cristina Lammer and the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations [CSIC] provided material and technical support during various visits.

The project took place in time blocks over 2 years and is focused on making 24 hour 'drop' recordings in six carefully pre-selected points. It also involved developing a practice of first hand 'being in the field' as an audio and sound-field oriented research group. We were then able to return for an extra year as a result of Covid-19 restrictions disturbing our original schedule. We are especially grateful to the park administration for this extra support .
