Each year, community members gather at Newburyport’s Waterfront Park to walk a scenic 3-mile route in honor of victims and survivors of domestic violence.

Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center's annual Walk Against Domestic Violence is one of the Center’s largest fundraisers of the year. This year the walk is on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at 8 AM.

Mary Jacobsen speaks with history teacher Anthony Guerriero about the legacy of bestselling author and award-winning American historian David McCullough, who died in 2022 at the age of 89 at his home in Hingham, MA.

A favorite and frequent guest on the show, Anthony in the past has shone a light on the achievements, motives, and minds of prominent figures ranging from Thomas Jefferson and Ted Williams to WWII spy Mo Berg.

This time, he illuminates what sets McCullough’s work apart from other historians, and will explore the impact of his research and writing on figures ranging from John Adams and Harry Truman to the Wright Brothers and Theodore Roosevelt, among many others.

McCullough was twice awarded both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. As his New York Times obituary put it, “His research was deep, his writing was lively, and his narrator’s voice in documentary films was familiar to millions.”

Mary Jacobsen talks with Sonya Martino, Sankofa Tour Guide for the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire, who will talk about the tour she leads, “Bound Together: The Washingtons & Ona Marie Judge in New Hampshire.”

During the Spring of 1796, George Washington’s final months in office, Ona Judge, an enslaved woman owned by the First Family, escaped the Executive Mansion in Philadelphia with the aid of that city’s free Black community and made her way to Portsmouth, NH.

On the tour, participants learn the story of Ona’s quest for freedom and the President’s relentless efforts to get her back.

Sonya discusses why Ona Judge’s pursuit of freedom deserves remembering and recognition, and how the Washingtons’ efforts to capture and coerce her back into slavery provide us with a fuller, flawed, and more human understanding of the often idealized figures of the first President and the first First Lady.
