The Dust Bowl was a disaster of the future--a calamitous combination of the rapid destruction of the prairie ecosystem that had survived droughts. High wheat prices stimulated greed to plow up the most marginal soils, shortly after the land runs had ripped the land from Native control. Yet, an epic drought made these greedy, irresponsible farming practices deadly. Folks fled Oklahoma and Texas, starving. Straight out of Grapes of Wrath, the experience xenophobia as they fled the Dust Bowl for jobs in California. The rhetoric of their arrival mimics today's bigotry towards today's Latin migrant farm workers. If you can see any positivity in this story, farmer practices did improve, the government restored some prairie, made The Plow that Broke the Plains and had Woody Guthrie to chronicle this event.

I don't think we can overstate the role that the Dust Bowl had in showing that the time for the Homestead Act had passed its prime. While we can never forget the role this law played in displacing indigenous people, at first it provided predominantly White farmers, either immigrants or U.S. born, good, productive land to rapidly increase commodity crop production. Yet, as settler colonialism moved deeper into the West, lands became more marginal and less productive. Still, homesteaders needed to farm the land for five years (eventually reduced to three), build a home and make it their residence. Therefore, the odds got worse of success, yet, homesteaders needed to show that they were plowing up soils that would have better remained as prairie. During period of good rain, growing wheat in southern Kansas, Oklahoma and North Texas worked well enough, when a sustained, multi-year drought descended on the area, there were no deep-rooted grasses to hold the soil together. The soil blew around within the Dust Bowl, burying houses literally and the dreams of homesteaders metaphorically. People got dust pneumonia and other diseases. Many had to flee the area searching for jobs elsewhere. While irrigation and better agricultural practices have thus far kept history from repeating itself, I wonder if history will repeat itself unless we increasing restore prairies.

Johnny's Loaf & Stein was a restaurant in the mall in the town where I grew up. It always seemed to attract a cast of real characters. I imagine these songs playing as background music there. 
Having moved recently from the Great Plains to the Cascades and now to Lower Michigan, I try to release a track every few weeks of my own brand of instrumental music that mixes a hefty dose of 60's pop and rock with accents of blues, jazz and classical music.
I hope listeners will indulge me and take the attitude towards my music as listening to a crazed radio that will randomly change stations and never linger too long a single musical style.
I don't use samples or premade loops. I figure if it doesn't come from me it's not really my song.

Blind Willie Dunn is the sort of bluesman who, if he didn't exist, seems as if he could almost be made up by a hack novelist. He's been on a chain gang(allegedly), naturally -- in his case, for stabbing a man to death in a juke joint brawl. He has, by his own count, 26 children by five women. And he never picked up a guitar until he was 58 years old (though his age, now approximately 80 years, is a guess at best). Wife No. 5, the story goes, had bought him a guitar as a present, and the thing sat gathering dust until she took off. Willie got himself a gallon of moonshine, picked up the guitar and taught himself to play. That sounds right out of central casting but may well be true, and, if nothing else, the legend looks good on him.

Dunn's hard, cutting brand of blues is about as elemental as music gets. Made with his own guitar and the clatterings of a drummer known only as Foot-Tambo. Dunn's songs are not so much slices as slashes of life. On his albums-- the titles themselves speak of jealousy, rage, and impending violence--he sings about scenes from his long and storied life: women he's had, or wanted but couldn't have; jobs he's worked at; ass-whuppings he's delivered. But this is no joke, made up just for white-boy punk-rock consumption. He means it. Dunn's songs have endured remixing, and you can be damn sure that if, like I do, Dunn thought the track made him sound foolish, he'd probably pull a knife on everyone involved.
