Close attention to the qualities of working-class culture is in short supply in this era of ubiquitous distain for the working-class. This measure of respect is one of the chief contributions of Jack Metzgar’s new book, Bridging the Divide: Working-Class Culture in a Middle-Class Society.  In this episode, Metzgar discusses with New Labor Forum Consulting Editor Joshua Freeman what he views as the distinct values of working-class vs. middle-class cultures. Anyone committed to a resurgent working-class and concerned about the decades-long alienation of segments of the working-class from progressive politics will find Metzgar’s observations and arguments of great interest.

A few weeks ago it came back to me. A sudden flash of memory as I was strumming my guitar. The song was retooled and embellished at The Star Chamber and thus, here it is!

The image behind the song is that of a golden cage.
It is a very beautiful and expensive cage.
Ultimately though, few people would to live in a cage, no matter how pretty.
This song is also about a dissatisfaction with life, even though you might lack for nothing. Of life becoming work, and losing spiritual value.

Joe Penny, Lecturer in Global Urbanism at the UCL Urban Laboratory in London, talks with Álvaro Sevilla-Buitrago about his alternative history of capitalist urbanization through the lens of the commons.

Against the Commons underscores how urbanization shapes the social fabric of places and territories, lending awareness to the impact of planning and design initiatives on working-class communities and popular strata. Projecting history into the future, it outlines an alternative vision for a postcapitalist urban planning, one in which the structure of collective spaces is defined by the people who inhabit them.

Álvaro Sevilla Buitrago is Associate Professor of Planning History and Theory, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (http://multipliciudades.org/). Blending critical spatial theory and urban history, his research traces the role of planning in the genealogy of capitalist territorial formations, understanding it as a device for the dispossession and reconfiguration of autonomous modes of social reproduction.

James P. Cannon — America under the workers’ rule

A repository for the solo projects of Gaze Santos, musician/magician of the Hodic Sphere.
He is an aspiring multi-instrumentalist with folk and psychedelic leanings.
Originally hails from Canada, he currently resides in the land of the rising sun, also known as Japan.

Musick has been a part of Gaze's life from very young. He grew up playing the viola in the London Youth Symphony of Ontario, and various chamber orchestras and choirs.

His musical career really took off with a series of spells that he began casting in 2004. The result of these spells was the mysterious Toronto musical group known as The Zodiacal Lunacy Collective. They would only play on the nights of the full moon. 
All music was improvised. Nothing was planned. Everything was attempted. 
Much were the benefits of these spells for all those involved...
