Many neighborhoods in Chicago are plagued with an infestation of rats and a group called The Tree House Humane Society implemented a solution to combat the rising numbers by introducing thousands of feral cats to specific neighborhoods - which proved more effective than the usual tried-and-true methods of traps and those terrifying signs displaying red-eyed rats urging people to dispose of food properly.
Nevertheless, I only became aware of this when I began a relationship with a young lady residing in one of those neighborhoods in danger of being overrun by vermin and was used by The Tree House Humane Society as a preliminary test environment. It was common for me to see 2-5 feral cats on her block at each visitation, and months passed from summer to fall and then into winter ingrained in the same routine of counting all the cats that I witnessed before entering her place and then....... (the x-rated nature of our amorous commingling prevents me from providing any more details).
I left her place one cold day in January and experienced something troubling with my Xterra as soon as it started. Not being too mechanically inclined, I could not ascertain the issue, but to illustrate the problem: you start your car and hammer down on the accelerator while it is still in park. I experienced this "high-throttling" noise all the way home accompanied with the temperature gauge severely in the red. So, I thought it best to take off from work the next day and bugger to the service center for a much needed evaluation.
I was at the service department for a few hours before one of the mechanics finally delivered the diagnosis: a small cal had climbed into the engine assembly to keep warm and was cleaved by the fan/fan belt when I started my truck. Most of the cat's body was missing but enough was still intact preventing the fan assembly from working properly. The cat's remains were able to be removed w/o any significant damage, but the entire assembly had to be steamed due to the smell. The funeral cost for the cat, which I've coined FanBeltKitty, was $391.
