The Swing Riots 
The Swing Riots took place in the late 1820s to 1830s in Sussex and elsewhere in the UK, where farm labourers fought against mechanisation of the farms, taking work from the labourers, raising profits for farm owners and politicians at the expense of the workers. Men were hung for burning hayricks and threshing machines. I was told by my father in Tasmania many years ago, there were Luddites in the family and when myself and family moved to the UK in 2005, I did some research and there I found Edmund Bushby was indeed one of these and one of my family.  He was arrested for setting fire to a hayrick or at least being involved on the day in November 1830 and was found guilty and hung in his local village as an example to others on Jan 1st 1831.
One  year before in 1829 the farming family the Henty brothers saw what was happening and booked a passage on the ‘Caroline’ and asked if there were others who wanted to come with them to Australia to start a new life and my great great grandparents, George Bushby and Mary Streeter took up the offer.  It is said that on the voyage out to Western Australia, Mary was the ‘life and soul of the party’.  George was the ships carpenter.  They then left Western Australia, and eventually arrived and settled in Launceston, Van Dieman’s Land/ Tasmania.
The term ‘Swing’ was used as a signature on threatening letters farm labourers sent to their employers saying if they didn’t stop the machine threshers they would be destroyed and those letters were signed, Captain Swing.  The term ‘Luddites’  came from similar letters signed by fictitous Captain Ludd.
