Okay. So. I've realized that-- I write what I want to hear, right? Well, I'm usually so busy with that part that I can't even appreciate what little bits of genius are in there (yeah, I'm a cocksucker fuck you) until years later-- usually, it involves the percussion, talking in particular about Lasst Train Ride and Hippin' Hoppin'-- and then I look like a braggart, but hey, if it's WORTH bragging about fuck you.

Tunes by Tahu (Original Stuff)

Song covers in the style of Wario's GBA titles. Source material can be from anywhere.

Waamixes: songs that are essentially the exact same as the original, but feature Wario soundfont(s). 
The waamix designation still applies to songs that more-or-less match the source material, even if the given MIDI has been heavily edited or doctored.*
Waarangement: songs that use the Wario soundfonts, but also sound sufficiently different from the source material: in the case of tracks that used a pre-existing MIDI, the song is considered the source material, not the .mid. 
Examples of waarangements include "Bad (Mario)", "Doodlecture (WL4II Doodle Woods)", "Fury Rock (WL4II Fiery Cavern)", and so on.

To best exemplify this distinction, compare "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Wa" with WL4II's Toy Block Tower, aka "Ob-la-di Obelisk". 
'Ob-la-wa' is a waamix, because it features WL4's instruments, and changes the drums a bit, but is functionally the same as the original song. 
'Obelisk' on the other hand is a waarangement, because its sound is wholly different to that of the original, due to the addition of swing, parts of the original TBT's drums, etc.

* Examples of this rule would include "I'm Only Sleeping in the Row", which sports a thoroughly repaired melody line and a split-up rhythm section, but only because the melody line was highly inaccurate, and WL4 can't handle so many direct voices as the rhythm section was asking for.

I actually started making this because the original's instruments are so damn similar to Bionicle Heroes, but the idea of sentence-mixing the Dungeon Dilemma vocals was just too damn good to pass on. Creating Wario's vox was much faster, as I was able to learn from working with the DD keysplit and streamline the process of making them match the notes.

It's been so long since I made this that I don't remember much about working on it besides making the KeySplits for W and Mona's vocals. Making bounce loops for Mona and mapping each sample to where it sounded good proved quite challenging, but I like how her vocals turned out quite a bit. 
Also, just like the real game, Wario's vocals this time are totally different from those seen with the Week 6 covers. That had more to do with the fact that I actually pitch-mapped them rather than using the real WL4 KeySplit. Like with Mona, Wario's vox come from WW: Mega Party Game$.

...Just now, I spent a good amount of time updating the mix. I did some EQ'ing & mixing, mostly. I put M&W in separate DirectWave's, for one. Made the Drop's hi-hat less garish. 
I brought the old marimba channel back in to some degree, because it draws a little too much attention to itself if you're taking the vocals into consideration. It'd be fine if it were an instrumental. 
Not sure how well the changes I did to the drums' EQ go over. I should really make different channels for them so I can give them that extra bit of attention.

Got the idea for this when I thought about the similarities between Hx-1 and the Bloodlines Guitar. My original motivation was wanting to do something with said incredibly sick guitar. 
Actually, I don't really know if my motivations were as tangible with this one as some of my other covers. I just wanted to do it 'cause it's freaking cool.
That *was* why I ended up going with SuperSponge sounds, though, was the Hx thing.

Image was a background from the Archive dump of SuperSponge. It was chosen at random, because my Explorer doesn't like generating image previews, these days. SO, I'm glad it was a winner. 'Put a smile on me face.

Xander Martin requested a WL4 cover of this from me. Unlike some of his past requests this one seemed easy enough to warrant actually following up on. So I took a stab at it. 

At first I was using WarioWare, inc. as my standard for which sounds I could use. Actual Flute and Pan Flute sounds would be open to me this way, and the choir as well. 
[30,2] was an absolute shoe-in for the chorused plucked string, so that was obviously the first thing I did. I also went to the trouble of making this with Sappy playback in mind, unlike some of my other recent WL4 covers. 

Because of these 2 things I'd been flip-flopping on the idea of going full Arabian Nights with this waarangement. Finding ways of limiting the # of sound channels and # of voices while keeping audio seamless put the idea of also limiting myself to base WL4 instruments (justl ike good old day) in mind. 

So, after the initial arrangement was finished, I basically halted production for a while. I finally took a drug holiday this week, and I may resume it tomorrow (not sure just yet).
But anyway, today I came back to work on it a little more, since I remembered not being satisfied with it where it was. I did a bunch of patch event changes, and spruced up the choir part (which is now strings). 
For a while I had the 1st Flute set to be the Soft Electric Piano, but ended up changing it to [113,2], the Arabian Nights shanai. I ended up leaving the echo as [5,2] though, because it sounded like an echo for just the flutier portion of [113,2]'s sound. This gives the illusion that the lead is a doubling.

Updated the vocals finally, to a point where they get a passing grade, so I'm gonna go public now. Still not completely satisfied with them, but to be fair I wasn't with Spamton Meeting's vocals, either, and I actually quite like how those sound, now. So, hopefully I'll come around soon enough.
Because of the higher tempo, it took a lot more doing to make them work rhythmically this time. I even imported some of Jimmy's voice clips from Mega Party Games and cut them up in the playlist window. 
The only one that really stuck around by the end was the cut up 'feel the rhythm,' but that's because the GBA version's the full clip, which makes its rhythm harder to deal with than any of the others.

I also went looking through the Twisted soundfont for Jimmy's Cellphone. I implemented some of those sounds, since- why wouldn't I.
I really like how punchy the drums became after layering the bass. The bass also has a sweep on its EQ. I haven't studied the exact effect that has but I think the frequency slotting is better off for it, anyway.

If I post this now, people might expect Big Shot to come out, since the sequel 
taboo will then be broken. The expectation for another sequel increases exponentially with each entry in a series, and I hate that.

The first time in a while that something I've done has felt like a legitimate rip. I loved that original picture so damn much that I did this - and on the same day, too. I should've done schoolwork instead but I probably would've wasted my time on something unproductive otherwise, so whatever.

I might do a bit more with the vocals, but a running thing with my Spamton mixes is I tend to dislike how the finished vocals sound at first but then they grow on me. We'll see how it goes. (Update: the same thing happened again, surprise surprise)
At some point I also want to improve the counterpoint (mostly regarding the strings for the Major section).

I'd really like to analyze the counterpoint between melody and bass to find out why the same two bar pattern works harmonically throughout the entire melody, even though I wrote it with the Minor section in mind*. I'm thinking the resolution notes in bar 1 probably take turns being tensions or chord tones for w/e the melody's implied chord is at the time. 
*WAIT. Minor. Consistent harmony... I chord and VI chord are both Tonic chords.... HRM.
So, the bass goes like "B, F#, D# E, G->F# | B, F#, D# E, G->E" That means the bass technically stays on WAIT> WIAT IT'S A PENTATONIC SCALE ISN'T IT. 
1 2 3 5 7. E F# G B D# Just corrected myself, the pitch is also F# and not F; Holy SHRIEYT.
I was thinking about how it technically stays on the I chord, specifically in the form IM7(9). It makes TOTAL SENSE that it works consistently between all the melodic bars like this.

(edit: technically it's got pieces from both kinds of a penta scale, which is why some parts felt like they worked better than others)

Anyway. Now all that I'd have to do after that is map the chords out, which rartedvisage already did in his sheet music in 2019, but I wanna take a crack at it myself.

The anticipated Act 3 of Half-Moon Highway. I came back to it today, after a number of months, and put the last few touches needed for the loop to feel natural. For some reason, there are uploads of the song that loop to a different place and leave out the drum phrase right before where it loops as well. In addition, unlike Palmtree Bad, this one doesn't loop naturally with the loader as part of it, either. 
So a big part of postponing it was caused by looping stuff.

Edit: updated the refrain to include the "I've Had" vocals. Also added slide notes to that pattern so the pitch bend she sings goes up by one more semi-tone.

Fun fact about the intro: that high "thonnah" lead playing the vamp is made of two parts. One of them was originally the Pinball Zone guitar. If memory serves, it was changed to the Honky-Tonk Piano patch, I think, by an accidental "Init song with this position" at some point. 
However, it just sounded so good; when I came back to the project after a long time, I never considered it might not be purposeful until I actually looked at the SF Player and thought "that's not right..."
After switching it over to what I remembered it being, I was like "wow that other thing it was set to sounds SO much better."

Completely sequenced by me. On that note, I've been surprised by how smooth progress has been, considering I've been sick the whole time.
Still a work-in-progress, but I hope to get it to a point of being finished before midnight tonight, just to see if I can do it.

Update: wasn't able to public it before then because I fell asleep. But it's been ready since around 11:20 last night, or something. AAAaaagh.

Update 2: I did add in the fade-out and a little bit of dead air at the start just now, though.

When I first started sequencing the strings I didn't like how they sounded, right. I ended up also opening Bad Future because I had the idea to see which patches I used for the pads, since they sound really good. I saved the mixer settings for the pad track and brought that over, and that's basically why the pads in this sound so good.

Half Moon Highway (Good Future)

This is another of those songs I've wanted to post a cover of for a long time, and specifically using this soundfont. Even on paper you can see why.

Getting the chords to mesh with the rest of the sound was the biggest hurdle, I think, because unlike the previous couple of times I tried this, I'm a lot better at transcribing than I used to be.

I'm kind of glad I never finished covering this until now, though, because I don't know that I could've gotten the 2nd Lead to sound as good otherwise.

Quartz Quadrant Past (SuperSponge Cover)

I wasn't that happy with the mix initially, but after the last few days of it being up on Private I'm actually quite happy with it, now.

Originally I had started this using SB Drawn to Life instruments, but pipca did something with the Crash soundfont recently, if I remember right. Some kind of fighting game song, I think. 
But anyway, that made me think to use Crash, which in retrospect worked SO well that it gave me the inclination to make all future SRB2 mixes just use whichever soundfont worked best for the compositional style. Happy late birthday. it took me 4 tries to type birthday just then.

I wondered yesterday if 4/13 had any significance. I had this odd feeling that it did. Then it turned out to be Homestuck Day.

Done entirely with C700. Tried to get it as close to the original as was feasible. I may update it to feature the 16th note tambourine to fill it out a bit more in the future.
I originally started this project last... summer, I think. The bulk of the work I did back then, including transcribing the accordion. I transcribed the notes as accurately as I could, since that would make or break a large portion of this for me. 
Everything from the section just before the breakdown, all the way to the end, which of course was more labor-intensive than the first half, which I covered just today (edit: whenever that was).

How to Orchestrate Spamton

Directly caused by seeing pipca's take. I was like 'I wanna try,' so I did. 
Was initially dubious of how the lead was shaping up, but I'm really satisfied with how I managed to mix it. The way it turned out, I could swap the 2nd doubling from 24 Wildflower Reed to 80 Hurry Up Square seamlessly and have it sound just as good.
Had a bit of difficulty getting the bass to sound brassy but not awful, and bassy but not too smooth. I ended up doubling 3 Deow bass with 120 Headrush.
I had the idea of achieving the right-pan brass's octave sound using 63 Calliope, which has a similarly octave-like sound.
I got the growl of the lead using Fiery Cavern, but that didn't sound that great by itself. I beefed it up with 113 Trumpet, and briefly debated soloing that but that didn't sound good either, so I kept both and did some panning trickery. I ended up duping it for a third layer, after 24 Reed sounded great with 113. I couldn't decide if I liked 24 left-panned or 80 Square center-panned better, so I did both, putting them in order of mounting grandiosity.

As for the project notes, I mostly remember there were inaccuracies between the Re-Pac version and the original that I was fixing in FL but never completed. Maybe I'll *eventually* freaking get around to it. Update 2: apparently part of why I didn't finish was because I decided to implement these fixes to the Joe and Mac cover, which unfortunately isn't quite as good as it sounds.)

I can tell you this, though. I finished the whole thing in about 3 hours.

Wario's Ultimatum

Requested by that Brandon guy. I figured I might as well, since it's the mp3 that was sitting in my files for over two years. I apparently exported it on 9/11 at 8:11AM, 2021. 
I remember turning off the sound effect channels specifically to export this. Then the old vocals (which used my voice) were made in January of 2023. Then I got Charger's vocals in February. And then I got Shawnster involved on likeee the 22nd of December.
In other words, across its lifespan, the project saw three Christmases. :P

I also made that character design. The shutters around the eye are exactly what they look like-- flexible shutters that follow dude's pupil, which as you can kinda tell is a concave shape. The pointy parts you see are gold and shiny. The rest is a shade of blue similar to the background, and has a texture akin to somebody's tongue.

Fun fact: I originally made it 74bpm because I wanted the "Indoor version" to be a Cleanin' Out My Closet MIDI I got online, initially. However, if that were the case, we wouldn't have the Indoor version I published. ...Maybe COMC will still make an appearance, perhaps as the replacement track for Mystic Lake's CD?

UPDATE: Happy New Year 2022! Here with a MAJOR Update to Stardust Present! I've added the remaining HUE's, replaced the Daow portion of the "Hit it" with the "EY!!" vocal from Club Sugar, and added in the siren. I've also given the effects on the Loader an overhaul. I finally used a Limiter for the sake of getting the master to be nice and loud without clipping like the old audio does.

Unlike the waarangement made for Stardust Speedway Past, this one was NOT made from scratch. Most of the channels were (sufficiently modified versions of) Iestyn's MIDI. The electric piano chords that make the rhythm section I DID do completely from scratch, and the drums as well (including the intro), with the exception of the pre-chorus break (the part with the high-pitched cubana "not-a-cowbell" agogo thing), where I used Iestyn's version as reference.

The choice I made to include WL4's vocal bits was an inspired moment, for sure.

OH SHIT, this is the 100th track in my "Post-Return" playlist! Pretty sure I forgot to add some of my tracks to that, though! so, uh. ...Oh, whatever.

I downloaded two MIDIs for this song, one for the After the Fire version and one for the Falco original, and wouldn't you know it the Falco MIDI sounded more like the After the Fire version than the MIDI made specifically for the AtF version. BUT there was a banner ad with just the cutest little baby on the page that I got it from, so it wasn't a total loss. But anyways, the result of that is I've inadvertently created a hybrid song of the two versions by attempting to instill bits from the After the Fire version that were worth including. ...For me, this is essentially Tainted Love: the Right Way, in a bizarre sense because it's 80s stuff, and it'll probably become relatively popular, knowing the Internet (edit: okay, but actually fuck everybody? this song is better?), BUT I actually enjoy this song, so.

Also, I can't believe it's taken me THIS LONG to realize that :carpet-ride: comes from VB Wario Land. I had to reeeeally think about the way that Wario's head was drawn before I realized.

This is actually one of the oldest tracks created for the hack, but MS's laptop fried however long ago and we've only just now gotten around to remaking it.

It occurred to me listening back that the fade-out I placed on this track is very conveniently at a similar rate to the original track's fade-IN, which means of all the tracks in this whole frucking playlist, THIS is the one that's most likely to loop most seamlessly.

Wario Land 4 II: Boss Gate (OST Ver.)

It's time to play "Guess the Source", everyone! I made the transcription myself, so no help there. ...Oh, and speaking of which, I'll betcha this is the first time anyone's made any sort of desk phone sound effect using only WL4 samples.

I'll tell you this, though: the bits of it that I copied down were literally such a pleasantry come from nowhere when I heard it, that I stopped what I was doing just to try and do something musical with it. There's just something so aesthetic about percussive organ chords accompanied by a low A being used as a "Now Dialing" tune of all things.

what's great is my laptop speaker is so awful at anything besides treble that the BandPass on Wehro is practically undetectable without my headphones.

I heard this in Film Class, as the main Riders' leitmotif while watching the ol' 1903 ten-minute film. The final showdown (the location of which I based the thumbnail's scenery on) had a cool addition for the finale where the bass part got fleshed out, and I wanted to do something for it at the very least.

So I was wanting to do something with this song anyway, but I didn't get the idea to put the Undertale spin on it until I read those lyrics. Total shoe-in for Flowey. Not to mention the third verse could very easily be used to describe the final act for the Pacifist Route as well:

In other news, for one reason or another the lyrics section did not include the harmony, which is a crime. I had to basically listen back to a YT upload of the song over and over for the chorus so I could write it down. After all that was done, I went and added a bunch of slider notes to try to make the choruses sound like the ones from the real song. I unfortunately couldn't quite the guy's "Uegh" to come across, however I'm thinking about messing with the note velocities some more tomorrow, so I can accomplish a similar effect to what I accomplished with The Baron's saxophone.

Update: didn't mess with velocities as much as I expected to, but I did put in most of the important vibrato parts for the melody, as well as spruced up note timing and the pitch bend. It's up to you if it sounds any better.

This one I decided to do because it really taps into that same spirit. Like, if there were a 1v3 minigame themed after Wario. I can't remember which instrument I replaced with the Accordion, but it fits so well in (whatever)'s place that it doesn't bother me.
