This is a remix that I made after hearing about the death of Satoru Iwata, the ex-president of Nintendo of Japan. While he may no longer be with us, his legacy will live on in the many games he has left his imprint on, including - but not limited to - Balloon Fight, Super Smash Bros. and Kirby's Adventure.
While I may not have had as active an interest in Mr. Iwata as some others may have, I will surely miss him like all of us will. Let us take this opportunity to commemorate and celebrate everything he has done.

This is the high-score music from the C64 version of Commando.  It has been recreated entirely on the Casio VL-TONE VL-1.   All of the sounds are from the VL-1.  The only "cheating" that was done is I removed the "beep" sounds from the drum track in post-processing so that you only hear the snare.  

Audacity was used to record and mix 4 separate tracks.  I also used the VL-TONE's built-in synth to create a custom bass instrument and background music.  The standard flute is used for the main melody.

ey, happy 30th anniversary to the nintendo game boy!! it’s amazing how long it’s been, so to celebrate today, i made a tribute to the gb’s launch title, super mario land! i think this is one of the most underrated mario tracks and games, so this is the perfect time to give it attention!
i only found out about the anniversary today, so this only took me a solid 3-4 hours to make surprisingly

Just an idea that popped into my head yesterday. While trying to get ahold of SCC sounds from various things, I remembered I had La Mulana's SanbikiSCC soundfont laying around, so this makes use of that.

Tried to stay as close to the SCC+PSG limits as I can. Still sounds off in some places, but it still sounds close enough for me.

White Park Zone ~ Act 1 (YM2612 Remix)

This doubled as my final project for Sampling in Audio Production class.

Creating this one was definitely interesting. Like Arabian Nights before it, Frequency Slotting proved to be rather tricky. Here are (abridged) notes I took for the "Report" in Week 11 :

There's a snare that I copped from the very start of "Soul Organ Impromptu", as it sounds very similar to the original 40 Below Fridge's snare with a higher sample rate. The main Kick is a synthesis BD which I purposely made sound like a Tom, because the original song's bass drum is actually an A3 tom. 
I also have a Rex Loop in place that accompanies the main drums. This loop I hooked up via Out 3&4 and Aux Send 1 to two different slots in a Line Mixer. Filter 2's frequency has automation in place. The automation I also hooked up to the Wet/Dry for the reverb used on slot 3 of the Line Mixer.

For the Bass Organ, I had the idea to combine the Subtractor I already had in place with an NN-XT of an organ in a vocoder. When the organ didn't sound good, I decided to try some Synth Lead patches, since the Subtractor sounded like an Organ as it stood. After that, I eventually got the idea to hook Band 5, the main giveaway that a Saw was one of the ingredients of this sound, to a CV pattern. I wanted to have it at 1/2 at first, but when I saw that hooking it up to the CV caused the visualizer for Band 5 to stop varying the way the others did, I ended up speeding it to 1/32.

The backing Clean Guitars I did some subtractive EQ, like a Peaking Filter in practice, to try and make it add to the icy feel. I also gave it a customized Amp preset, one which works well with the EQ automation. Getting it to frequency plot has proven difficult, however, mostly because I keep Solo'ing different parts to make them sound right, and as a result the different parts keep "sliding" into different areas.

I managed to get around this, to a degree, as of starting this new paragraph. I was able to get past the clashing of the Rex Loop and the guitars' high ends by placing automation on Parameter 1 of the guitar's EQ, which I had set to sharply decrease the high-mids & a low Q value. Really I'd like to be able to add more high's back into the guitars, but I can't see that being feasible without getting rid of the Rex Loop or changing the filter settings on the Lead's panning pad to decrease the high end, and that is something I just can't do, because the slight gravel of that saw-type sound would be lost.

For the lead, I used a combination of Oceaf, CS_PWM, and Flute_Mellow. The combination of the Oceaf's mid-to-low and CS_PWM is sort of in itself a decent example of frequency slotting, because they play off of each other so well. Speaking of Freq. Slotting: because of all the extensive EQ'ing I had to do in order to get a half-decent mix, the Flute_Mellow is currently muted.

I messed with the filters some more. I don't know if I'll be able to get it to sound exactly how I want it as it stands, but I was able to get it to sound kind of neat using Softube, and as a neat side effect I was able to get a neat sound I decided to re-apply to my Kick (and later the snare) after re-routing the wiring.

Wario Maker: 40 Below Fridge

This one I found considerably easier to frequency slot for than 40 Below Fridge. One interesting thing about this one is the guitar's harmony thing, the plinkier second guitar, is actually a Subtractor patch, but the Softube Amp covers that up. I also wanted to go for a sort of vintage sound to the brighter colors in this track, to add to that feeling of eeriness, like your main comforts-- the drums for example-- aren't quite as real as the threatening noises you don't know the source of.

Q: Why do I use the Wario Land 4 soundfont to some capacity for so many tracks?
A: Because I love the way it sounds, obviously. Half the reason why I'll start making a MIDI in the first place is that I want to hear what it'd sound like with the Wario Land 4 soundfont.
