Notes: 

If you are here for the second time a deep thank you.  Someone asked how far I thought I could push this track on the production end.... here is my answer and challenge accepted.  I ended pulling the track to see how close to Stone Temple Pilot's - Sour Girl I could get.  

What a ride it has been as I delved into new things and endless moments of frustration.  If Tainted Icarus were a group of other people and I was doing their mixing,  I would have choked them all at least once.  Organic, dynamic and each of them powering up their performances...but damn does that make for some difficult mixing. 

Sour Girl is a dark, heavily compressed and tricked out track...plus some killer low end

At the end of the day or weeks in this case I pushed, pulled prodded, twisted and worked with no limitations.... yeah... maybe you shouldn't use an EQ like that... but if it seemed to get me closer away I went. 

A lot of dead ends and dark, lifeless tracks as I pushed...

Something important still eludes me and I think it may be something analog.  The slight pitch shifts and elongated/slurring of the drum track and Scott's vocal tonal shift are a clue... tape brake? tape machine? reel size?  I could go on and on.  

A fun and demanding engineering project and forced me into learning more about the tools of the craft.  

Always about moving the ball forward!

With today's final print and bringing the project to a close.  I got close enough to be proud of what I achieved.  Sour Girl is peak STP and peak era of big budget productions.  Difficult to say the least and certainly a bit outgunned... but the challenge is how I learn best and there is always next time.

I hope when you hear Greed you enjoy it, you hear the hours of labor spent at the dead ends... hours spent trying to tweak a second of the track to fall in line with the theme.  It's not perfect.... but nothing I ever work on is going to be.  Its about inviting you into the space where the music was made and to share the moments captured.

As I Am is a true collaborative effort from conception to finished execution. This project fired up in March and has been a whirl wind of recording, re-recording and more recording.

Notes:  Hi everyone,  think I am going to steal the line from my friends, November Sound, and say if you are reading this...I appreciate you.  This track has been in development for a while and another learning experience.  

This song is meant to rail against the systems that claim moral superiority and victimize their followers. Events as they are happening in our times and the frustration with the silent acceptance of this behavior. 

How defined these systems of control are and how we are born into blindly accepting these chains.  Then we spend our lives trying to figure out why happiness is so hard to find.   

Some major milestones on the engineering side and while I could rattle on about this... lets just say that the microphone recorded tracks out number the DI 5 to 1.  Custom processing chains, coupled with the best performances I could muster on the bottom shelf gear. 

Perfect...certainly not... but most definitely Tainted Icarus,  I hope you enjoy it and always my brothers and sisters.. peace and love!

Notes: 

Sometime ago I found this wonderful music piece by Brian Wilson titled, Talk To Me (https://soundcloud.com/rexgoliath-1/talk-to-me).  After a couple of weeks I reached out to Brian to see if he would be game for me doing some writing and singing.  

In an effort to keep this short and to the point.. it was a wonderful experience to try to push and prod the vocals into place... trying to get them into the same room.  Lots of tweaks and moves in very small increments to get to this place.

As is customary with my work... is it perfect..no.  The lyrics have been pushed and prodded in an effort to maximize meaning and reduce chatter.  I feel Brian wrote a piece of music that deserved nothing less.

Inspired by a modern technology filled future but held in the past with outdated human idiologies affecting the entire planet slowy chipping away and creating all this out of control social divison across the planet bringing the end game and slow extinction process ever closer and our scientists have warned us we need a fundimental change if our one and only paradise planet in deepest of darkest of space is to be saved, however seems its buisness as normal and profit before planet is fully on the menu with our short sighted money puppet politicians and super rich continuing to slurp up the corruption and extert there control and dominace over our repressed materilaistic socialy divided societys flooding and feeding social media with the same old outdated idiologies lost in 1000s of years of human myth and legend that we so dearly hold upon ourselfs as the truth and teach our childern as the truth, blindly following money, religion and owner ship of land like mindless zombies and then disagree about it and have wars which are the very things tearing down our societys and the destruction of nature and life on this planet!  

We have social media outlets that could encourage us to be more environmently and socially friendly instead we are encouraged and brain washed by watching the same adverts over and over to buy materialistic things like furniture or some green liquid in a plastic bottle to wash the dishes and poision the enviroment, dont forget to buy your lottery tickets you want to be rich so you can be happy! You must go to work everyday and become a fully funtional brain washed member of society so you can buy furniture and get drunk and forget your worries the planet is fine have another drink maybe a pint or two of cider its glamourous and makes you happy all in the pursuit of profit, this deadens our brains and keeps us focused on money and going work paying those bills while we bow before a select few like they are better than us all! No they are not they are humans just like you and me who share this planet and the time has come to end this out of control repressive manipulisation which is eating away our societys and decaying this planet and all its wonderous life that exists no were else in the universe! 

We live in the future with furniture and technology not the past and like all life thats ever existed on this planet we need to evolve to benifit the entire planet and all life not the few so our childern and all life can enjoy this paradise in space forever! Life is special for everyone and everything and deserves to be treated as such! Fire up the passion with this foot stomping thought provoking say it like it is get it off your chest tongue and cheek original electro gaming revolution cosmic peace and unity binaural acid trance psychedelic reflective spoken word manga journey! Needless to say “Johnny B. Goode” is considered one of the most recognizable songs in Popular music. It is credited as the first Rock ’n Roll song about Rock ’n Roll stardom. My version of this classic was deeply influenced by Peter Tosh. An interesting side note - when Chuck Berry originally wrote this song he changed “coloured boy” to “country boy” to ensure radio play.

Tale Of An Emcee (Ft. FRAWSTAKWA)

I think this track started 2 years ago. I remember talking about the vision with Jamie on the phone and then Jamie sent me a bunch of stems to choose from. I chose the standing bass and recorded my verse with a 90’s vibe in mind. I sent the track over to Russell to add some guitars, he sent that funk rock intro and riff back, and then I don’t know what happened after that? A bunch of other songs got made and the vision for this track expanded to include cutting my second verse and bringing Jon Lock in on vocals. Then the song sat again. Jon and I even started and completed And So You Say and Training Day after we had already got this song started. Since this track was visioned to be part of the first song on the set with Training Day, eventually it had to be completed. Wou-Wou then join in with his synths, rhythm guitar over Jon’s part, and some additional guitar over the first section. This gave the track the final fire it needed and Russell mixed and mastered it like a champ!

As always, massive thanks to Wou-Wou and Russell who have been regular collaborators on so many projects, on SoundCloud, Facebook, and Bandcamp. Wou and Russell will always be the core of my musical team. Thanks for being great friends!

Notes:
There is so much back story on this track that it could probably be a small book.  The riff that spawned it all was called 942 and for a while no one could remember who even did the original scratch tracking. Jay and I went back and forth blaming the other.   I was thumbing through our dropbox felt inspired did a quick vocal recording and the entire crew united to stitch together a rough demo.. one verse one chorus.. and it sat while life happened.   

Fast forward 10 months, Jay and I were doing our semi regular Skype sessions, and Jay says we need to get back to work on music,  let me give Thom a ring and see if he is up for that.  I said sure.. we have a dropbox full of stuff... the rest as they say,  is history.  

In my story with this piece of art, the thing that sticks out was Jay's insistence on me taking the lead vocal.  Even today he says... "I couldn't imagine anyone else doing it"... what an honor to have that spot with these guys....Thank you friends... it means a lot to have you guys supporting me.  Cheers!!

Lastly is our budding young recording artist who finishes the song off... Thank you young lady for joining us! 

These guys busted their butts and we pushed the boundaries again and hit a mark that has me feeling proud of the end result.  Normally I would run down the list of credits but in this case,  this song doesn't exist without each of us providing critical pieces that makes it work.  So regardless who is on what, with what,  Jay, Thom and I created this and each of us was required to birth this thing into the world.  

Jay, Thom as I have said many times before, feel lucky to know you guys,  glad to call you friends and I am certainly loving this "Tainted Dead Dust" thing we got going on.  We have a whole drop box of ideas to start working on... so take a break recharge and let's crack on!!

One of my heroes has always been Johnny Cash and I wanted to include one of his songs on my cover album. I originally was going to record his version of Depeche Mode’s song “Personal Jesus”. After going through the amazing list of over 1500  songs that Johnny Cash wrote I came across this gem that he recorded in 1974. My immediate reaction was “BINGO” -  this is the song that does it for me. He was clearly a man ahead of his time. To date, he has sold over 90 million songs.
RIP Johnny Cash.
