PM+ is very happy to welcome back techno misfit Emily Jeanne for a second round of precision club incisions which revel in the kind of squirming sound design that make our synapses stand on end. 

‘Liquid Crystal’ maintains the seductive poise and restrained intensity of Jeanne’s prior outing on our humble label, keeping a firm grip on the top-line energy and letting the insistent purr of the bass guide you towards total soundsystem hypnosis. The trick is in the mid-range, where the detail writhes and squirms its way through this meditative chamber of rhythm science crafted by one of modern techno’s most startling voices. 

The focus on transcendental fundamentals maintains on ‘Lagune’, which threads acoustic and synthetic percussion together into one densely knitted fabric designed to cloak the mind. Resonant overtones bleed out into looming atmospherics, and Jeanne holds down an unrelenting focus on the roll and rumble of the beat, making this a vital soundsystem asset for anyone unsatisfied with the concept of the one-dimensional ‘DJ tool’.

Critics and audiences first fell in love with the Alex Smoke sound back in 2002 when his debut Soma single ‘Chica Wappa’ landed in their laps. His sensational debut album ‘Incommunicado’ – released back in 2005 on the Soma label – generated a lot of heat with scorching tracks like ‘6am’, ‘Don’t See The Point’ and the sizzling ‘Chica Wappa’. It was the result of Alex throwing a variety of genres in to a melting pot and then pouring it out to create something that was truly his own. The decision to partner up with fellow Glaswegians Soma seemed only natural and just one year later, in 2006, they released Alex’s second album ‘Paradolia’. Smoke’s unique style is a product of his background in classical music (Alex is skilled pianist and cellist), a love of electronic music and his experimental nature. He is a master of diversity and his ability to weave atmospheric soundscapes and deliver dance floor dynamics is what makes Alex stand out in the crowd as he sails through the ocean of artists that is today’s electronic music scene. Recently Alex has been touring across Europe and Japan and has also just released his third album, ‘Flux’, on his own label Hum+Haw (co-founded with Jim Hutchison).

In the first remix Detroit’s own experimental innovator Ryan Crosson goes surgical; injecting Smoke’s track with a rippling bass line that provides the main theme for the music as it sits comfortably underneath gentle synths and Alex’s mega-morphed, ghostly vocals. A percussion transfusion sees the original, intricate and glitch percussion being carved out and replaced with a more mechanical beat that compliments the bass and supports the other musical elements. Crosson stretches the track out to nine and a half minutes and maintains the song’s ambient soul while also including a driving end section, featuring percussive aspects that suggests homage to Smoke’s original rhythms.

Fellow Glasgow native and London based producer Sei A concentrates on delivering a slightly darker and atmospheric alternative ‘Never Want To See You Again’. While Alex’s original vocals may disappeared from the mix, Sei A has manipulated short vocal samples to achieve an eerie presence, enhanced by haunting synths to give this stripped back version a whole new feel. 

The laidback yet upbeat Roof Light Re Rub dives head first in to a pool of high-energy percussion featuring shakers, cowbells and hi-hats that gives the track a subtle Latin flavour while airy synths and jazz style piano slip in and out to drive the track and pace it through zones of liveliness and tranquillity.

Lea Porcelain - Similar Familiar (Benedikt Frey Remix)

Spheres is the first in a series of “documents” by Research, which intends to unite a diverse selection of artists around a common theme. The inspiration for this initial document comes from artist and mathematician Timothy Cresswell, whose carving of spheres covered in mathematical figures – a holistic, meditative process he refers to as “tuning” – has taken place for over fifty years and has inspired the art direction of his son Daniel. 

The leadoff track “Radon” from These Hidden Hands – the production duo of Tommy Four Seven and Alain Paul – does so with a red-toothed yet synthetic menace and with percussive patterns like an artillery barrage. Mondkopf then dials back the aggression somewhat for his piece “The Runaway,” yet keeps the sense of transformative tension running high with sculpted static, nervous Geiger counter ticking and majestic layered synths. SNTS closes out the A-side with the appropriately named “Dunkelheit,” a slow and steady audio journey – complete with dramatic pauses – through black rains and monolithic structures used for ritualistic purposes. The B-side opens with Oake’s “Blemmyae,” a slowly unfurling mass of audio fog whose hypnotically austere rhythm track – almost entirely composed from a single martial snare hit and a punishing digital bass drum – is used as bait to lure listeners into a force field of precisely interwoven drones and doppler-effect mayhem. Headless Horseman sustains this atmosphere with a club track for an alien homeworld: a dense mixture of shuddering / shattering percussion, imperious synth swells and crackling bursts of raw electricity. Grebenstein’s “Meet My Needs” delivers the final statement for this particular document, utilizing carefully segmented white noise and synthesized pulmonary sound as the basis for an ascension to uncharted mental realms.
