Onwards, through the darkness and into the great, desolate beyond. Looking backwards he could see the stars, the distant shimmering lights flickering amidst a galaxy one million miles away from the moon. They were climbing to the top of the mountain across the dense, bleak outback of a planet miles away from earth. There was a cold breeze in the air, one of which they had never felt before back at home. It was foggy, harsh and left a bad taste in the mouth as they continued to trudge slowly forwards...

Alliance Upholstery is a great name for a record label. Little more needs to be said than that however we will proceed. Up next on the label is a split EP which is perfectly apt for the last day of winter, a sun kissed affair offering a warmth and insight into the season which lies around the corner. In 1916, in the middle of the First World War, a small town in Ontario changed its name from Berlin to Kitchener. Many mercurial decades later, in 1988, the town now a mid-sized city, a duo called Vernal Equinox released a record that seemed to trace its roots back to Berlin, but this time the shadowy post-war Berlin of the 70s that produced Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and his Innovative Communications family, and Bowie and Eno’s Berlin Trilogy. These inspirations, viewed through a prism of 80s New Age and the autumnal denim-clad rural Ontario, became New Found World. 

New Found World is the inaugural release on Aural Medium, Toronto-based non-musician Linus Booth’s new label focussing on revisionist electronic, industrial and no wave music. Remastered from the reels and pressed on double 45rpm vinyl with an unreleased track from the original sessions.

Limited edition of 500 copies. 100 on bone white vinyl, 400 on black vinyl.

Cnidae is a Latin word for specific cells present among jellyfish, sea anemones, corals etc. It is these cells that separate cnidarians from other animals. Cnidarians are built in a very simple way, lacking skeleton animals. They seem to be innocent and beautiful, but there is also a sense of mystery, weirdness and wobbliness in them. They use cnidae, explosive cells, to capture prey and as a defence from predators. They do so by the use of toxins contained within the cnidae. If you have ever been stung by a jellyfish or felt the electric tingle from the tentacles of a sea anemone, you have been touched by cnidae.

cnidae is the sixth album released on the Ransom Note Records offshoot Bytes. jik is Paula, 21, and Bartek, 23, students based in Warsaw, Poland. cnidae is their debut album. Paula’s raw sketches formed the basis for almost all of the tracks. They were made in Ableton Intro, proof that constraints can be beneficial and also a reminder that great music doesn’t have to be created on sophisticated gear.

The album is made up of two extended ambient/drone pieces, embedded alongside several shorter, abstract electronic compositions. You are hearing 'arp', which falls into the latter category. Its beauty lies in its simplicity. The reflective, moving track is reminiscent of early AI-era Warp Records, with its lush pads and twinkling melody.

However, democratic decision making takes place on much smaller scales as well. Think of a committee that together has to decide who to hire for a job, or if you have to choose a restaurant with a group of people. But did you know that there are in fact many different ways in which you could run a democracy? And that computer science can actually help to design ways to run a democracy? In this episode, Ulle Endriss, professor of Computational Social Choice, talks about politics, participatory budgeting and of course their relation to: computers! Because computers can help us when it comes down to making collective decisions, whether big or small. Listen to find out why!

What Does The Democracy Of The Future Look Like?

As the world and its wife tries to board the last plane out of 2020, Eclectics rolls up with a charter flight big enough to ferry all-comers to Shangri-La. The Oh! EP, from Ibiza-based Italian producer Luca Averna and legendary British veteran Chris Coco, is 35 minutes of delightful, deep-dive distraction from a world gone mad.

This isn’t simply a collection of tunes sitting cheek-by-jowl with their remixes, this is a soaring suite – a movement in five parts put together with care, confidence and consummate craft.

First up on the in-flight entertainment is “There Is No Planet B”. Despite the distress-signal sentiment of the title, it’s an audio hug of breathy synths, languorous lead lines and slow, whirling propeller percussion. A mid-paced reminder that we really are all in this together, the melodic flow coalesces midway through, giving directions to the dance.

The Veteran Delinquents (Joe’s Bakery and Passport to Paradise stalwart Craig Christon along with producer Tim Hutton) pick up the baton and increase the momentum like veteran DJs reading the room. Their remix follows on seamlessly from the original, bigging up the boogie with handclaps, piano and a beat that channels electro and new wave New York.

Next up is Jazxing (The Very Polish Cut-Outs/ Transatlantyk), who find another gear and chug straight ahead – full steam in widescreen. Increasing the bandwidth even further they throw in guitar licks and percussive punctuation, forcing the familiar melody into bold new territory.

And suddenly, there you are, in the middle of a four-to-the-floor groove for discerning dancers after a journey so smooth you couldn’t even feel the corners.

As the bass peters out, title track “Oh!” blossoms into view, building slowly, layers lapping over each other, gentle yet steady, fragile but with a firm foothold. The pace has quickened, but the pin-perfect pacing means you don’t realise until you’re halfway in and committed to the ride. Oh! indeed…

Then, the final act. Once again, Eclectics frequent flier James Bright tales the controls and banks away beautifully from the original, leading you into territory littered with broken beats, rippling synths and an afro-infused groove. This is all played out against a gentle backdrop, a watercolour wash of sound that smooths the flightpath, tempers the turbulence and joins the dots between guitar flourishes and snare snaps.   You have reached your destination. Enjoy.

While Earth's magnetic north pole will keep moving in a fast-paced rhythm, Magnetic North will launch new tracks on a regular basis, being a platform to bring Nordic and non-Nordic artists a little closer, at least for a short period of time. Magnetic North focuses on electronic music and sound pieces, and all the possible conjunction points between those two.
