The word dhāraṇī derives from a Sanskrit root √dhṛ meaning "to hold or maintain".This root is likely derived from the historical Vedic religion of ancient India, where chants and melodious sounds were believed to have innate spiritual and healing powers even if the sound cannot be translated and has no meaning (as in a music). In Buddhism, sutras, also known as suttas, are canonical scriptures, many of which are regarded as records of the oral teachings of The Buddha.

Jizo Bodhisattva is known for making a vow to be present with and benefit all suffering beings until every single one awakens. Jizo is also the protector of women, children, and travellers. 

Jizo is known to specifically help children who have died too soon to navigate the transition between birth and death. Zen monasteries in Japan offer Jizo ceremonies to help ease the grief of women who have lost their babies during pregnancy or childbirth.

Jizo Shingon Dharani -  for lost children

namo bhagavate trailokiya prati vishishṭaya buddhāya bhagavate. 
tad-yathā, om, vishodhaya vishodhaya, asama-sama
samantāvabhāsa-spharana gati gahana shvabhāva vishhuddhe,
abhishiň chatu mām. sugata vara vachana am-ṛita abhishekai mahā mantra-padai.
    āhara āhara āyuh saṃ-dhāraṇi. shodhaya shodhaya gagana vishuddhe.

    sarva tathāgata hṛdaya adhiṣhṭhā-nādhiṣhṭhita mahā-mudre svāhā.


The purpose of this sūtra is said to be to help sentient beings in a troubled and tumultuous world. According to this sūtra, beings will leave suffering and obtain happiness, increase in prosperity and longevity, remove karmic obstacles, eliminate disasters and calamities, remove enmity and hatred, fulfill all wishes, and quickly be led onto the Buddha's way.[3]

It is held by some that when the dhāraṇī is heard, it can imbue the alaya consciousness with pure seeds that will help lead one to buddhahood. This mantra is also associated with Green Tara.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the dhāraṇī, often alternatively entitled the Namgyälma mantra.
