The word dhāraṇī derives from a Sanskrit root √dhṛ meaning "to hold or maintain".This root is likely derived from the historical Vedic religion of ancient India, where chants and melodious sounds were believed to have innate spiritual and healing powers even if the sound cannot be translated and has no meaning (as in a music). In Buddhism, sutras, also known as suttas, are canonical scriptures, many of which are regarded as records of the oral teachings of The Buddha.

The Four Vows (in Buddhism).

Sentient beings are numberless, I vow to save them.
Desires are inexhaustible, I vow to put an end to them.
The Dharma Gates are boundless, I vow to practice them.
The Buddha Way is unsurpassable, I vow to attain it.

At Zen River Temple, and other Zen temples and Zen groups, these vows are chanted at the end of the day after meditation (zazen). This new recording is the same song I uploaded to SoundCloud in 2017. It had been recorded using a small mobile phone microphone that my brother gave me as a starter kit because a few months earlier, I had sent him a folk song recorded with a Skype headset, the only microphone I had! He had to laugh.
This time, I wanted to add something extra. While practising improvising, with the help of my guitar teacher @digmon-roovers, I decided to give it a shot and weave it into the song. 

"The Four Bodhisattva Vows are the fundamental vows of the Zen Buddhist path, expressing the bodhisattva's resolution to attain awakening in order to liberate all sentient beings. With enlightenment comes a realization of the fundamental equality of all things, and the understanding that to liberate oneself one must liberate other beings and that to liberate other beings is none other than to liberate oneself. 

In this lies the unity of wisdom and compassion. The Four Vows are chanted in Zen monasteries at the end of daily services and memorial services for the departed."

When the world happens to feel chaotic, wearing the robes - the Okesa or rakusu - of the Buddha is akin to wrapping the world with compassion and benevolence.

Vast is the robe of liberation 
A formless field of benefaction 
I wear the Tathāgata teaching 
Saving all sentient beings.

This verse is chanted three times after dawn meditation - dawn zazen - in Zen temples across Asia and the West. The intention is to show respect for the teachings of the Buddha, which are signified by the cloth Okesa, before wearing it.

The Okesa is a rectangular garment worn over the left shoulder. The Japanese kesa are made of patchwork (割截衣; kassetsue), composed of five, seven, nine, or more panels of fabric that are sewn together.

I dropped a new version of the Heart Sutra on SoundCloud years ago, in 2021, when I started this venture. Since then, I have improvised a few things and added some new elements- thanks to the encouragement from friends and teachers! I hope you will enjoy it. Hannya Shingyo 般若心経, also known as "The Heart Sutra" this sutra is one of the most recited in Mahayana Buddhism.

Heart Sutra ReImagined

This track was commissioned for primary school students to sing/ listen to during their class about Buddhism.

It uses a simple phrase from the Enmei Jukku Kannon Gyo, or "Ten-Line Kannon Sutra", translated from the Japanese by the late Zen Master Maezumi Roshi.

Morning Mind is Kanzeon, 
Evening Mind is Kanzeon!

At the Zen River temple, the chant is often followed by a dedication to help those in need due to illness or problems, or as a memorial to those who have passed away.


"This phrase encourages practitioners to focus their minds on Kanzeon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, in the morning and evening. It emphasises the importance of aligning one's thoughts and consciousness with this figure of compassion at both the beginning and end of the day.

The chant serves not just as a statement but as an invitation to cultivate a compassionate and mindful state of being from the start of each day. It encourages individuals to connect with the essence of Kanzeon and her boundless compassion, helping to initiate the day with intention and focus. The complete sutra, especially this phrase, is commonly used in Zen Buddhist practices, including chanting during zazen (seated meditation) and other ceremonies."

I had been working on this piece when our beloved cat, Tobi, suddenly passed away. A few days before, he had started to fade, but we didn't realize it would happen so quickly in the end.

I was playing my guitar, searching for harmonic notes while he sat in front of me. It made me sad to see that he was in his twilight days. In response, I played my arpeggio in reverse, so it sounded like falling rain.

By the time I finished working on the guitar piece, Tobi had sadly already passed away. I wanted to find a Buddhist chant for animals to help him cross to the other shore. I discovered that "Om Mani Padme Hum," meaning "Jewel in the Lotus," could be used to assist both animals and humans in planting the seeds of practice for their next lifetime. This beautiful chant also helps with the process of grief after losing loved ones, guiding them as they cross to the other shore. "Om Mani Padme Hum" is widely recognized as a Tibetan Buddhist mantra, often associated with Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion. 

The ending felt like a way to send him off and into the light.

Each of the six syllables carries a unique quality and meaning.

Interesting note: 
- The musical piece combines elements of rock, folk, world and country music with electronic beats. It has an emotional impact that is both upbeat and nostalgic. The overall vibe is energetic yet laid-back with a pop feel to it.

Wiki says that daydream is a fantasy that a person has while awake.

Daydreaming is the stream of consciousness that detaches from current external tasks when attention drifts to a more personal and internal direction. This phenomenon is common in people's daily life shown by a large-scale study in which participants spend 47% of their waking time on average on daydreaming . There are various names of this phenomenon including mind wandering, fantasy, spontaneous thoughts, etc. Daydreaming is the term used by Jerome L. Singer whose research programs laid the foundation for nearly all the subsequent research in this area today. The list of terminologies assigned by researchers today puts challenges on identifying the common features of the phenomenon, in this case daydreaming, and on building collective work among researchers.

There are many types of daydreams, and there is no consistent definition amongst psychologists, however the characteristic that is common to all forms of daydreaming meets the criteria for mild dissociation. Also, the impacts of different types of daydreams are not identical. While some are disruptive and deleterious, others may be beneficial in some way.

Yes, I'm daydreamer. For this track I used acoustic guitar, oboe and clarinet, upright and supplement it with glockenspiel.

I love to sing with my guitar. Love to play my guitar and sing.
I practice Zen too, so sometimes I combine traditional Zen Buddhist chants with guitar instrumentals that I have composed; other times, I just sing a folk or popular song that resonates with me.
June 24 2024 marked the release of ShoSaiMyo Vol.1, first released on Bandcamp. It features Five of the Zen and Sutras playlist songs that Brad Stock produced and engineered at Painted Sky Studios.
