This updated version of the original song was sung by The Chipmunks, and the lyrics were written by Ross Bagdasarian and Janice Karman. The first version was featured as the opening theme song of the 1980's classic cartoon TV series: "Alvin and the Chipmunks" (from seasons 1 through 5) or just "The Chipmunks" (from seasons 6 and 7).

The first 11 episodes from season 6 were added to the syndication package along with the first version's opening intro from seasons 1 through 5. This 1983 opening intro was used for those season 6 episodes. It has the same visuals as the first opening intro, but uses the updated version of the "We're the Chipmunks" theme song featured in the later 1st and 2nd half opening intros.

During season 6, the classic cartoon TV show's name was changed from "Alvin and the Chipmunks" to just "The Chipmunks" for seasons 6 and 7. This opening intro was used on a handful of episodes from the first half of season 6, and originally contains clips from the "The Chipmunk Adventure" as the 1987 film with the updated version of the "We're the Chipmunks" theme song.

During the second half of season 6, this new version became the standard opening intro for the 1980's series, but with the same updated version of the "We're the Chipmunks" theme song as before, and was used until the end of season 7.
