‘A farewell to idolatry, where culture is absorbed into nature, like a body back into the fertile soil. Written as a 27 club survivor, lamenting the young dead, no longer young and celebrating the spectral presence of iconised peers. Reflexive and self-aware of the problem of over-identifying with the fictional performance of the solo act in various guises or archetypes: the rockstar or trapstar. Auto Life is a practical attempt at a weird re-hybridisation of otherwise seemingly divergent strands of popular music, conflating stylisations usually segregated by genre.

Auto Life was written as a collection of songs for eventual live performance. Recording music is absurd—an act in which you initially perform to no-one. The inclusion of a sample of crowd noise in ‘Fameless’ is the music studio equivalent of a laugh track being added to the soundtrack of a sitcom—unable to give up on disappearing horizons completely and imagining another context for performance in which an actual audience beyond the performer is present.

Autotune Punk—as a music of antagonism that resists from within, bending the lanes of a machine that flattens out the vocal performance to a given scale. I can still express feeling—even angst—but the machine doesn’t care. Refusing its own funeral, emulating the dead—it’s a Rock simulacrum. A renewably performed myth. I broke the spell. I just heard it as it was. The sacred framing of presence makes the pop idol always-already-dead by turning them into a symbol and an image—undead, un-ageing and endlessly reproducible within a commercialist visual culture.

The music which I would grow up listening to would later become a tool towards first facing, maybe later dismantling—or at least bending—the structures in which music was still being written, performed and recorded into existence. My emulation of and interest in pop—and popular—music is not in irony. I love this music—yet I question the context and conditions through which it has come to exist and continues to change shape. Opening up the horizon of pop to a new kind of strangeness, where the familiarity of the pop song disappears into blissful distortions and mixed signifiers towards a world in-between, otherwise unknown’.

Nathan Germain aka Sprælle ([Sprah-lé], he/him) is a 24-yo French musician, producer, and DJ based between Montreal, Canada, and NY City, US. His work collects stimuli from multiple musical and cultural references such as contemporary laptop electronics, ambient and experimental music, as well as mainstream pop and videogame soundtracks. These, in particular, had a role in inspiring his debut EP called CRUSH UP, appeared early last year on the Spanish label xenonyms, which enacted a lively confrontation between lo-fi components and sharp sonic bursts on the foreground of energetic and eventful progressions.

Other than releasing several single tracks from 2019 onward, Sprælle already appeared twice on the Montreal-based platform Audio Bambino, with the tracks Aïsha and Gravel on this 2nd and 7th compilations respectively. Also, the artist hosts monthly residencies on Montreal’s N10.AS and Tunis’ Ma3azef radios, called Bleed In The Underground and Rearranged Existence. On this occasion, we're happy to present you with a one-track single written and produced by Sprælle, a 20-minutes mammoth composition called Ropes To Eternity Lead Nowhere which has been reportedly designed to take the listener through multifaceted sceneries of abstract realities.

Engaging on the challenge of blurring the boundaries between genres via different compositional solutions and production techniques such as time-stretching, field recording manipulation, and digital saturation, just to name a few, Ropes To Eternity Lead Nowhere is a challenging, free-form yet well-conducted journey into Sprælle’s take on electronic music, delicate and impassioned at the same time. In the track, a mutable collage of sound and rhythmical components is patched together around a central theme of wonder and discovery, which is declined in distensive moments of relaxation, tense passages of agitation, and abrasive, emotional junctures. All the drives behind Sprælle’s creation process converge into an organic tale of an ever-changing life creature arising from a pond of scattered materials and manifesting itself in its diverse, unseizable shapes, until the final abrupt conclusion. Benelux (Who am I) is the new single from Croatian Amor & Scandinavian Star ft. Alto Aria following a series of collaborations between the two producers, it is also the second time they collaborate with Alto Aria. Benelux (Who am I), follows the path laid out by their earlier collaborative work, their particular branch of introverted electronic music, and while it holds many traits of club music it seem more fitting for headphones, late night commuting and self-enquiry.

The Story Of Leonora (OST) is the seventh edition of PAN’s Entopia soundtrack series. The first original score by Toxe, the album accompanies a short film of the same name by Clemens Stumpf and Cleis Vandam. Serving as an extended version of the original score, the new release from Toxe additionally presents audio yet unheard by viewers of the film. Created in 2020 between Berlin and Amsterdam, The Story of Leonora is released today as a 10track album and a limited edition sliding puzzle designed by Emir Timur Tokdemir.

The album ebbs and flows while retaining the individuality of certain moods–– sometimes ominous, often innocent. Recalling an elementary introduction to the world, Toxe draws inspiration from sounds sourced in daily life: the clicking of high heels, birds and humming machines. Cascading echos and short breaths merge with delicate synths and incomprehensible human mumble. The simplicity of these elements are distilled to their core, evoking the naïveté of the world to an alien perspective, while maintaining sonic sophistication throughout.

This week’s TANK mix comes from London producer and Xquisite Nihil collective member @oxhy, known for his collaborations with Elysia Crampton and Yves Tumor and his tightly wound tapestries of ecstatic, spiralling sound. Oxhy’s mix, titled “want pollination”, consists of tracks from him and his brother recovered from a corrupted hardrive, file names scrambled so as to produce a fragmented archive of uncertain authorship.
