I like how some of the original components come in here, but not in exactly the same way they first appeared. Nice!

The separate elements you have stitched together sound like a cohesive piece to me. Nice!

There are some really great sounds and passages here which are all distinct yet linked. That said, I could see making anyone of these into a complete track. The middle section, for instance, could be expanded, perhaps with some further complex drum sequences and melodic section. And the first ambient section is really nice - I wanted more!

when that beat comes in, so good.  I like the concept.  I find different stuff seems to emerge creatively when traveling.  Maybe it's something about being in a different place

Enjoyable journey. Stitching brings nice surprises sometimes and this has a satisfying overall compositional shape. If there is anything I would attend to it would be around some production tweaking. The squelchy line that comes in about a minute in--really satisfying at first but then evolves to become too dominant. I like that the drum track is fairly background but maybe there is more to do with playing with its dynamics relative to the squelchy line? The piano comes in as a bit of timbral shock--which is a nice surprise--but the how the piano sits next to the rest of the elements...maybe needs something? More distant? More disturbed? Even more stark?

I chose ‘Unmaking Music’ because of its physical materiality.

I had initially made a first version that contained many different movements on six tracks. That was pretty okay. But then I added some lurking piano - and somehow I felt that Raincat's hammering of whatever was the perfect partner for it. So I removed all the other tracks (only crow field recordings from Vienna remained, also the amplification of a kinda bell-like sounding Raincat “solo”). I didn't try to accompany Raincat, but let him accompany me. Thank you, Raincat, for your track!

I think this waits for a lead instrument. If someone wants to trio: The Piano is now 90bpm and somehow C-ish… (mainly CDCD, sometimes CDGC).

Unmaking Together: Krakenkraft joins Raincat [disquiet0698]

This is the second third of the #DisquietJunto Trios project. The left-panned section was Torpid Scorpion's contribution, while the piano on the right comes from me.

My contribution is on the right. 

For my part, I acted in a supporting role, starting with 14 Below Zero’s notes & Cherry Audio’s emulation of Octave Electronics’ 1976 CAT synth and then adding effects & editing where I felt appropriate. I had such a block on mixing this because I dislike hard panning for most things…so I mixed it in a way I preferred. After I felt good about that mix, I hard panned it again (except for some effects) and yeah, I still liked it. This should be fun for someone to add to next week.

For the second track, I went with “Mr. Bowed Jangles” by @tristan_louth_robins. I extended the length of it by looping the piece 2.5 times. Then created the right channel track using Dillon Bastan’s Max For Live granular looper device Iota in Ableton Live.

You are hearing some shortwave recording of military weather reports, and what is (allegedly) a Russian diplomatic service transmission (time-stretched), bad violin playing and the sound of wind in the trees of my garden. Kinda concerned I've packed too much in here, but hope there's space for someone to add something more in part 3. It's been fun- thanks Alan Blip & Junto crew for the provocation :)

This is an experiment with a Buchla 100 system that I recently built. Everything you hear is generated by the Buchla and fed through a spring reverb and then mixed live on a Tascam recorder to emulate the experience of recording directly to tape.

I have been working on a project: making a sort of mashup of sketches I’ve made over the last few years when away from home. I’ve made these on holidays, or when visiting friends: at times when I don’t have my usual music setup, but can do some noodling and experimenting, using music apps on a tablet and sometimes using a small semi-modular synth.
Since some of these sketches/fragments have nice sounds, or patterns, or themes, I thought I might select a bunch of them that I like, see if some match with respect to rhythm, tempo, tonality, vibe, and then see if I could maybe combine them into a longer piece (adding some extra parts or transitions as needed.

So this is a slightly edited version of a work in progress. Given the amount of material I have, the end result might be something like 3 different pieces that each are between 12 and 20 minutes long. We'll see...

I’m curious how you experience this. 
It will inevitably be, as a result of the process, a somewhat fragmented piece, consisting of bits that were not intended to fit together. Does it feel totally disjointed, like loose sand, random bits that do not gel? Or is it something of a musical journey (as I hope it might be). Would you like to stay a bit longer in the different segments? Or did you feel impatient to move on? Is it nice if some sounds or patterns or themes recur later on?

Something I've been trying to do with my vintage synths is to recontextualize them as contemporary sounds rather than throwbacks. In this piece for example, I wanted to use the Moog, and have it sound like a Moog, but without feeling retro or nostalgic. And that's what I'm most interested in hearing from you: how it's landing for you and ideas for what I might do to meet my aesthetic goal of preserving the unique voice of the instrument, without situating its sound in an earlier era?

Interlude 1 is my first sketch for an interlude within a ≈ 40 minute piece about the cosmos. It seems like maybe the piece is too thick, but I want to get it out and move on and come back to revisit it after I get all the other pieces in place.

I used Sound Particles to create a few background textures and then decided to improvise a synth bass sound, and then a synth flute, and a brief plucked string sound, all from the Roli Equator software synth. 

I added some delay chaos to the recordings with plug-ins from Valhalla, GRM, and some Tai Chi reverb.

Then in Pro Tools I cut and moved the separately improvised tracks into a composition that tries to capture the vibe while I was performing. 

All the tracks were recorded and mixed in 7.0.2 for this piece. For SoundCloud and your listening convenience I converted the surround sound piece to binuaral with APL Virtuoso. I always have trouble with binaural. It doesn't accurately convey the full spatial quality of the immersive mix as it is supposed to do.

Interlude 1 - Binaural disquiet0711

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
