Operation Doomsday is probably my favourite MF DOOM album (it’s hard to say really, Vaudeville Villain is a close second). Being a huge old school hip hop fan, when I first heard the album it blew me away with how innovative everything was, whilst being ridiculously raw and authentically 90s sounding. There’s something about DOOM in this period which is just different, he was making music for the pure love of it, was homeless at some points, and you can just hear that this album was born out of sheer passion to keep on with music to continue what he and his brother started, and what they had planned. It’s always resonated with me.

For this remix I used the Extended Raw Rhymes version of Go With The Flow from the deluxe version of the album. I first remixed this back in 2020 and wanted to update the mix for the album. DOOM just sounds so hungry here with MF GRIMM backing him up, and the style is so authentic and genuine, it oozes real deal hip hop. GRIMMs adlibs make the track even harder to me, you can really feel the sense of comradery between the two, and of course the scratches on the beat are just nuts.

This is one of my favourites from the album - the original is one of my all time favourite tracks, so I was very happy with how this remix turned out. Ive always loved how grimey the verses are, and I wanted to emphasise that with the beat. Didn't want to try and re-do a grimey piano beat for this though, instead went for a grand sort of vibe with strings and some crazy echoing keys, I was gassed with how it turned out. Also wanted the bass to hit hard on this so I added some extra layers to make sections of the verses hit harder. Had to chop up the same iconic 'get out of my life woman drums', and went all out as always when layering them to get that fat sound.

One of my personal favourite beats from the album, I knew I wanted to remix Gas Drawls and I had a rough idea of the kind of beat I wanted to make for it. The first flip I worked out with just the bassline reminded me of the laid back intro to Gas Drawls with the Steely Dan vocals, but I knew I wanted to switch it up in a big way to create some proper atmosphere for DOOM's verses. This sample was perfect for that, the melody of the strings was crazy to me, but it was those echoing sounds which I layered ontop that really made the beat for me, I love adding elements like that to beats and especially in this case I thought it worked perfectly with adding to that grand sort of vibe. The mix ended up really really thick here too, I wanted to make the drums fat so had to layer up the sample too, definitely ended up with a hard hitting sort of feel.

I first tried to flip this sample when I was working late. I couldn’t get anything to work so I left it, was a bit frustrated at the time but I held onto the sample cause I knew I had to have another go. There was too much potential to give up on it, just needed to have another listen with a fresh perspective.

Very very happy to have gone back to it to make this beat. I actually flipped the second progression of the beat with the more upbeat feel first, then filtered that to see if I could layer any other chop over to have the filter act as a bassline melody. Always love when that works out, cause the more subtle piano chops worked perfect ontop of the filtering, really lost my mind when making this one. For me when piano based beats are good they’re hard to beat, just something about that instrument over drums is great to me. The way the filtered melodies blended with the more subtle keys really gave the beat a lot of depth and emotion, and I was then crazy motivated to keep on with adding a bit more layering to give the track more variation. Had to make the string chops a  bigger part of the instrumental, couldn't just have them at the end like with the remix.
