I bugged out crazily when I made this beat, I’d spent ages chopping up different sections of one jazz song, which was mostly piano and bassline melodies, but there was also some really nice saxophone playing at the end of the track, which I had recorded into the MPC. I spent most of the day trying to flip the piano and bass melodies though, and completely forgot about the saxophone samples which I still hadn’t chopped up, I just had them recorded ready to chop up. I decided to have a break from the main loops I was working on, where I was spending ages trying to mesh piano and bassline chops together, and thought it couldn’t hurt to chop up the saxophone samples to see if they would work with what I had, seeing as it was all from the same song. At this point I was pretty worn out, having spent 4 hours or so working on the other chops, so I kind of went into autopilot and chopped the saxophone melodies into 16 pieces. This meant that the MPC was completely full: the 16 A bank pads were all piano sounds, the 16 B pads were all bassline sounds, the C pads were all saxophone chops, and the D pads were all drums. The saxophone flip came together instantly, it probably took less than a minute of experimenting with them over the beat for me to know the melody I wanted to make, and it got me way too excited. The maddest thing was the saxophone fit perfectly with the bass sounds that I had already chopped from an earlier point in the sample, which really made the beat work for me, because the lows of the bass worked perfectly alongside the highs of the saxophone, and it just all came together so well. Its always sick when this happens, cause it reminds me to keep persevering when producing, because although I was a bit tired and worn out by the time I’d chopped the piano and bass samples, by just pushing myself to keep on and chop the saxophone sample, I was able to create something I was really proud of.

I originally uploaded this beat with the Hell On Earth acapella over it ( https://soundcloud.com/tapeheadloops/hell-on-earth-remix ), which I still think fits the dark vibe of the beat, but I'm much happier with how this one turned out, particularly the drums: I think the layering I did here does the sample justice, it really is the kind of beat that needs hard hitting booming drums which I think the original upload was lacking, and then once I added those drums on this version, I knew Masta Ace would fit the style perfectly.

I remixed this song once before, but it was over a laid back jazz beat with a smooth vibe, and when I re listened to it I realized that was the complete wrong type of beat for this verse: https://soundcloud.com/tapeheadloops/same-game (I've got plans to re-do this beat with a different DOOM acapella because I still think his voice and flow sound right over it). 

DOOM actually went off on this track though, he always does but in terms of speaking on serious issues and touching on deep topics, he really goes all out here unlike anything you ever really hear from him. The way he speaks on the state of things here is from a pretty matter of fact viewpoint, and definitely rings off slightly pessimistic to me, as if he’s fed up with the situation and the way things are, which is what made me choose this beat (also the way DOOMs flow hit the kicks when I chopped the acapella was crazy). The sample has that empty feeling to me, which I thought fit well with the lack of emotion DOOM shows here, despite what he’s talking about being mad deep in that regard, I just wanted to elevate that cold outlook of looking at the worst things for what they are without sugarcoating anything, just telling it like it is.

I vividly remember making this beat, I’d probably been producing for about 3 months, and was showing someone who was getting into old school hip hop how the beats are produced etc. I was tryna make a simple beat so it would be quick and not too time consuming, to clearly demonstrate the process without spending too long chopping up samples etc. This guitar sample instantly stood out to me, and I chopped it up and made this 2 bar loop instantly, the whole process of flipping the beat defo took under 30 minutes which is crazy quick for me. It’s always fun when beats just turn out naturally like that, cause to me it shows how pure the inspiration is from the sample, and the result is as organic as possible.
