This song really resonates with me on mad levels, De La Soul always speak facts and touch on deep topics, and the way they do that on this track is crazy to me, the subject matter is nuts. Last time I remixed it I went for a very different vibe, going for a sample with a sound that fit the whole underwater vibe. Had to do something completely different here, I flipped this sample to focus on the idea of moving on from negative situations to focus on positivity, and thought that fit well with the verses here, seeing as making a change like that is definitely a journey with mad opportunities to slip up and make the wrong decisions. As I’ve got older that’s what stands out to me most about this De La Soul track, more often than not you’ll find yourself in ‘troubled waters’, and it’s mad important to recognize this and be aware of how you can ‘sink’, and make sure you keep your focus and do what’s right for you. Can translate into so so many different things it’s crazy, and that’s defo what makes this track so timeless to me. 

Went crazy again layering different elements of this sample, it gives the track a lot of variation and meant I could bring more emotional elements and melodies in for the more serious parts of the verses, which is something I’ve always wanted to do when remixing this song. It did make it a bit difficult to mix though, the layering is good cause it gives the sample a lot of weight and makes the sound full, but it can drown out the acapella, especially with this one where a lot of the instruments had quite high resonance. I really did turn up the acapella loads, making sure it was mixed and EQd right before that, and ended up turning it up by nearly 10DB, which is way way more than I ever normally would, but I really didn’t want the verses to get completely lost under the beat.

I originally had the verses from the acapella that the ‘Amazin’ scratches are from on this beat, but it didn’t fit the vibe I wasn’t happy with how aggressive Omniscience’s vocals were, they’re dope vocals and verses but not right for the vibe of this beat. I remixed De La Soul recently but I knew that this beat fit their style perfectly too, so I looked into acapellas by them which I hadn’t remixed before. This acapella for ‘Breakadawn’ was never officially released but somehow it exists on YouTube which I’m mad grateful for, it’s one of my favourite songs by them from a very underrated album imo, so I was hoping they'd work over this beat. The original beat for that is quite stripped back and dark so I wasn’t 100% sure if this vibe would go well with the acapella, but I was very happy with how well it fit, really brought out the nostalgic side to the verses I think, where the emcees are reminiscing on the ‘days of the breaks’ (so 1980 if they’re referencing the Kurtis Blow track), which are ’just about over’. I thought that this bittersweet reflection was captured and brought to the focus by the beat, and I’m definitely happy with how the remix turned out.
