Always love remixing Masta Ace acapellas, and I was very lucky to find the acapella LP whilst out digging recently. I’ve always thought this acapella would be a great one to remix, cause the fact that Ace is freestyling means that the style is really open to interpretation and could work in different ways on different beats, cause it’s more of a raw verse showing skills rather than a polished song which was written with a specific beat and vibe in mind. I chose these beats cause they both feel like ‘freestyle’ beats to me, by that I mean they’re beats which aren’t too focused on one specific emotion, and are more just about capturing that East Coast Hip Hop vibe, which always fits Ace super well, and I thought with this acapella in particular it would work well.

When I originally came up with the concept for this remix I called it 'deceiving, achieving nothing', which I still think is the hardest hitting line for sure. This might be my favourite verse Pete Rock has done as an emcee to be honest, his lines are just mad creative here. 

I switched the name up to Stop Faking just cause it sums up the whole vibe of the track better, this track never feels like an angry one to me, INI always have that laid back style which fits Pete Rock's jazz heavy production, and on this track they sound more fed up then anything with all the artists faking, but again not in an annoyed way, more like they're saying it's plain to see, why even front and fake when it's that obvious. That's the aspect of this track which I rate the most personally, and wanted to bring that out in this remix.

I made both these beats back in 2018, sampling the movie ‘Day Of The Dead’, which in essence is a movie about hell on earth. I’d seen Night Of The Living Dead and Dawn Of The Dead a few times before, but I never really knew about Day Of The Dead which didn’t do as well as those other two. It’s the final film in the original trilogy of zombie films by George Romero though, so I figured I’d check this one. (I’d only say check it if you rate the other two) The movie is absolutely bugged, maybe the goriest film I’ve ever seen, it genuinely shocked me the first time I watched it it was that next, but what really stood out to me was the soundtrack, from the first opening theme I started paying attention cause the sounds were hitting crazily, and after I watched it I looked up the soundtrack straight away to see what I could sample. The whole soundtrack was crazy to me, not just one theme, the whole score for different scenes and moods in the film was mad atmospheric and emotional, I must have made at least 5 beats out of it over the next few days.

At the time I was in a very different place, I was very deep into production having been sober since December 2017. It wasn't easy staying sober at first especially seeing as my housemates still got waved, especially in the evening when I would normally have smoked into the early hours. I knew I wanted to stay sober because of how much happier I was, but it helped to distract myself from the vices that were around me, so each evening I was watching all the films that I used to enjoy watching before I started smoking and pushed that past-time aside in favour of getting high. The evening I watched Day Of The Dead was crazy and the soundtrack really did connect with me, I was spending mad time reflecting on the way I used to live, and these beats were completely born out of that reflection, I wanted to express those negative feelings and memories through the music so I was flipping the darker parts of the soundtrack with most emotion. Now all these years later, it feels really nice to be able to revisit these beats and make a proper remix with them. For the video I decided to use visuals from the film, which I thought would make sense seeing as most of the beats are sampled from the soundtrack. I tried to make a cohesive video that acts as a miniature version of the film, mainly focusing on the characters finding the ‘hell on earth’, trying to escape it underground, and ultimately getting trapped and overrun. I hope people enjoy this one, it’s definitely got a unique vibe to it, and I had a lot of fun reworking these beats and making something out of them.
