Since I started remixing and remastering my old beats it's been really helpful to hear the difference and improvements in my mixing ability. The first beat in this track is a rework of a very old beat, probably one of the first 10 beats I ever made. I was so happy with how it came out at the time, and it was mad to be able to improve on the concept I worked out back then and execute it better here. I wanted to take it one step further with this one though, and decided to add a new remix as a switchup, flipping a different part of the same sample that I used for the first beat. I initially only did this because of Just To Get A Rep acapella is so short, and I wanted the track to be longer, but it ended being a really great way of building on the ideas and concepts I was playing with back when I first flipped the sample, and mixing that with all the ways I've learned and developed as a producer since then. I'm really happy with how it came out, and will definitely be doing this again with other old ideas and concepts.

Memories of making this beat are mad vague and hazy. It was either late 2016 or early 2017, and I was too excited over the sample. Being a very old beat the drums were terribly done, so I've added news drums and balanced out the levels on the sample a bit better.

I’ve been feeling particularly motivated recently, and this verse from M.E.D. off Raid really resonated with me. I was originally trying to put a DOOM acapella over this beat but couldn’t get anything to work, and while I was tryna flip DOOM’s verse on the Raid acapella I thought I’d see how M.E.D.’s verse sounded. I’ve definitely always overlooked this verse because it’s crazy, so to the point and the imagery in his lyrics is mad effective to me (I tried to pick out my favourite examples of that in the visuals for this one). The general outlook of the verse is crazy inspiring, it gives off such a raw energy of focusing on yourself and what you love, no matter what might be around you tryna drag you down or throw you off that path. I was gassed with how this came out, and would definitely like to add a DOOM verse to this in the future, so I left that intro from his Raid vocal so I don’t forget (I’ve got plans to absolutely do something with that on the DOOM album I’m working on, at the moment I’m thinking of doing a beat switch into some hard hitting beat where DOOM just goes crazy hitting all the kicks or something).

I still like how the Biggie verse flows over the beat so I wanted to do something different here (not just re do that mix), and thought the mix of the beat itself could be a lot better, particularly the low end, and the resonance on the snare.

It's always nice when you get 2 flips from a sample which gel together. Here I filtered both flips to act as a bassline for the beat in different parts of the track, giving the sample more weight and flavour by combining the best bits of each, it's something I've been trying to do in most beats I make now and I definitely focused on it here, trying to give the track more variation and progression as well as building the vibe of what made the sample stand out to me.

When I made this beat I knew I'd need a laid back acapella to go over it. I tried a few Masta Ace verses from the acapella LP but I wasn't really sure. I tried this acapella from T-Max and was gassed with how his flow sounded, it fit well with the drums and sounded very very different to the last remix I did with the acapella, and it fit the laid back vibe of the beat perfectly. I was considering making the drums laid back but I decided to make them hit hard, partly cause the sample didn't have much low end so I needed the drums to fill out the mix.
