When I first started making this beat I wasn’t 100% sure with where it was going, the original sample had a completely different vibe which I thought would lead to a more light hearted melody. When I chopped it all up though I heard so much potential for a more rugged beat, especially with the harp that also had some bass to it. Honestly it just put me in the zone and I ended up doing a lot of layering to give the beat even more flavour, my favourite thing is definitely the flute/wind elements which I added right at the end, I’d forgotten I’d even recorded that part of the sample cause I’d been chopping and flipping the harp for so long, so I quickly chopped that up to see if it would blend with what I’d made and instantly lost my mind. It was adding those chops which made me really think this acapella could work, it had a similar ethereal sound to it which reminded me of the vocal sample from the original, but was still different enough for sure to add something new to the track.

I chopped up so much stuff to layer for the main melody of this beat that I was actually able to make some switch ups which used much less chops and layering, which was a good way to give the track variation and let it breathe a bit, before going back to the melody with the crazy energy that I rated the most. I think I made it clear how I felt about the melody with the kick pattern that I put over it, I wanted it to thump properly and really emphasise the boom bap vibe, taking those kicks away when the lighter melody comes back in. I just wanted this beat to hit basically, and I think I achieved that.

I made this beat in a very similar way to ‘Passin’, using a Dionne Warwick song from the 80s, chopping inbetween the vocals. I layered chops of the synth with this piano that had a lot of weight to it, which gave the beat a lot of depth, the vibe makes me think of flying or something, just has an ethereal feel to it. I managed to flip just the piano too which I used for a switch up to let the track breathe, and then bring back the main flip which hits crazily after that, cause it’s using similar sounds but flipped in a different way, with those crazy strings/synth layered on top. I also chopped up some vocals from the track, and ended up with 2 layers to add onto the beat at certain moments. I initially wasn't sure about them, but a few people have mentioned how much they like those vocals, so I made them a more prominent part of this instrumental version.

The first beat here is one of the first beats I made specifically to use for this project, I knew I'd be flipping the 'smooth operator' vocals to tie into the title of Operation Doomsday. Originally the first beat played out for the whole of this intro, and I almost cut it completely cause something just wasn't right to me. Then when I was much further into the album I heard the sample for the 2nd part of this intro, and instantly heard these vocals over it. That saved this intro, cause I really like the way it starts, and then that 2nd part is great for building the atmosphere and really feels like it's leading up to something, which I didn't have when it was just one beat for the whole intro, even with all the switch ups and layering.

Had a lot of fun editing the visuals for this one too, I really liked the idea of the cartoons playing out across the background to represent the vocals DOOM cuts in at the start, and then adding to the atmosphere of the build up at the end, showing the backstory of DOOM in a more subtle way.

One of my personal favourite beats from the album, I knew I wanted to remix Gas Drawls and I had a rough idea of the kind of beat I wanted to make for it. The first flip I worked out with just the bassline reminded me of the laid back intro to Gas Drawls with the Steely Dan vocals, but I knew I wanted to switch it up in a big way to create some proper atmosphere for DOOM's verses. This sample was perfect for that, the melody of the strings was crazy to me, but it was those echoing sounds which I layered ontop that really made the beat for me, I love adding elements like that to beats and especially in this case I thought it worked perfectly with adding to that grand sort of vibe. The mix ended up really really thick here too, I wanted to make the drums fat so had to layer up the sample too, definitely ended up with a hard hitting sort of feel.
