Inspired by Lonnie Johnson's "Blue Ghost Blues," Suzuki Junzo's second album on Utech Records, Ode to a Blue Ghost, channels the bleak side of his playing. While hints of his blues- and folk-inspired work can be heard at times, they're never far from the clutches of phantasmagorical loops and feedback squalls. Resonating guitar and meditative riffs inhabit a world apace with shimmering calm and levigating dissonance.

After three years Suzuki Junzo returns to Utech Records with If I Die Before I Wake, his fourth full-length release for the label. Junzo is joined by Ikuro Takahashi of LSD March, Kousokuya, Fushitsusha and High Rise. If I Die is a record comprised of roaring space blues and empyrean haze. Nothing less than imposing and exquisite, If I Die is conceivably Suzuki Junzo’s greatest recorded work.

Released initially on cassette, the expanded vinyl and cd adds one unreleased track.

Utech Records offers If I Die Before I Wake as the label’s one hundredth official release. Accordingly, the first 100 copies of the LP will be on cream vinyl w/exclusive numbered art print and the remaining 200 copies on transparent green vinyl. The first 100 copies of the cd will be a special Japanese Tour Edition w/green obi, exclusive numbered art print and tour poster and the remaining 200 will be a standard edition w/black obi.

Not the case with Junzo Suzuki’s La Course du lievre a travers les champs. Taking its name from the 1972 René Clément film And Hope to Die (which was itself adapted from one of Suzuki’s favorite noir novels, Black Friday), this album is a kind of lysergic folk heaven for fans of Japanoise.

Three long tracks float over a 45-minute reverie, and you wish it could go on forever. Channeling the spirit of his heroes (such as the late great Jutok Kaneko, who was a close friend, Hiroshi Nar, and others like Bill Fay and Gary Farr), Suzuki croons his pack-a-day lyrics through gorgeous waves of reverb in a way that just kills me. L’eau et les cicatrices builds in density toward a sustained, fed-back solo under ex-Fushitsusha/LSD Match/Kosoukuya drummer Ikuro Takahashi’s fluid yet restrained jazz beats.I’m out of superlatives. This is just a brilliant, brilliant album. 
So listenable and satisfying yet eccentric enough to keep you interested as well.

Japan seems to instill in its underground artists a sense of restlessness, consciously or unconsciously urging them to be as prolific and versatile as possible. Suzuki Junzo has certainly heeded the call over the course of his career. The guitarist is a member of at least four bands and has recorded with fellow eager spirits like Acid Mothers Temple leader Kawabata Makoto. Great as all that work is, I prefer it when Junzo's on his own, improvising cosmic psych-blues that feels akin to the wandering spirit of local hero Michael Hurley. Junzo arrives in town on the heels of a new album, simply titled 7, which finds him scraping and petting the strings of his guitar to coax out sounds both soothing and jarring.
